Miami (OH): Sigma Alpha Epsilon & Phi Kappa Tau -- Fireworks & Weed

Some members of Phi Kappa Tau and Sigma Alpha Epsilon at Miami (OH) may be in trouble. There are allegations about shooting fireworks and having fireworks in the houses, plus allegedly a “significant” amount of marijuana.

Maybe this is a teachable moment (I said maybe). 1) Shooting fireworks house-to-house doesn't, on the face of it, sound like a good idea. A real fire risk, and not exactly something easy to conceal. 2) Refusing to cooperate with police can very well encourage the cops to get search warrants. That's certainly within the GLOs' rights; however, the police are unlikely to cut anybody much slack -- or any at all -- once they've had to get those warrants -- correct?

Excerpts from ^^:

“Around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Oxford police responded to a fire alarm which had gone off at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, located at 310 N. Tallawanda Road, next door to Phi Kappa Tau.
“Officers arrived and saw a person shooting fireworks out of the third floor at Phi Tau,” Sgt. Jon Varley said.

The two fraternities allegedly had been shooting fireworks at each other . . .
In addition to finding fireworks, both exploded and unexploded, inside the houses, Oxford authorities allegedly found what Varley described as “a pretty significant amount of marijuana” and paraphernalia. Police were doing an inventory of the confiscated items on Monday.

. . . Varley said authorities might not have learned about the marijuana had it not been for a lack of cooperation from members of the two fraternities.

“All we wanted were the fireworks and the people who were shooting the fireworks … Because neither house cooperated, police obtained two search warrants, one for each house. The fire department also was on the scene.” . . .

This reminds me of what I said frequently as a 3rd grader: boys are dumb.

Okay, but in all fairness we're talking about chapters at Miami (OH) here. In the last couple of years or so at Miami there have been plenty of sororities, as well as fraternities, receiving probation or even being closed/de-recognized by their HQs, the school, or both.

Something in the water?

It was just a joke, but yeah, it's either something in the water or there's just absolutely nothing to do there. I vote option b. Then again, perhaps they are not so bright. If they'd just given up the fireworks, no drugs would have been found.

I vote boys are dumb AND there is precious little to do in Oxford or the surrounding area. What the hell were they thinking? No, wait, they weren't.

Probably they had the marijuana because they were depressed when the arrived a school to discover they had gotten in to Miami University in Ohio and NOT the University of Miami in Florida?!? The fireworks might be therapeutic as well to lift their spirits.

Judge: "How do you plead?"

Defendants: "Stupid, your honor."

Folks do dumb shit in college all the time. Females and dudes. I went to Ohio State, and it was endless dumb shit. This isn't anything shocking to me.

Reportedly Phi Kappa Tau has been "suspended" pending the outcome of investigation(s). Reports / allegations now are mentioning cocaine as well as the fireworks and marijuana.

This is Phi Tau's Alpha chapter, right?

ETA: Reports now are that both chapters have been suspended by Miami (OH) pending the outcome of an investigation:

Cocaine and marijuana... If you want to do those things in college, fine. Just don't join a fraternity.

These asshats have tarnished the legacy of hundreds (thousands?) of alumni.

Yes, this is the Phi Tau - Alpha chapter. Their national headquarters are also located in Oxford.
