Scott McKenzie - "If You Are Going to San Francisco" - Dead
The quintessential singing "hippie" who told us to "be sure to wear flowers in your hair", has passed away. Great song and great memories for all of us old enough to remember.

:( I love that song.

Cultural icon for his day. Sorry to hear about it.

Wow! That song really told the story of 1967-'68 with the "summer of love" and the whole peace/brotherhood movement. John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas wrote that song but decided it was wrong for his group, so he gave it to Scott McKenzie.
It is a beautiful, sweet, gentle song. Those of us old enough to remember will always smile and sigh a little. RIP Scott McKenzie. Your ballad helped define a generation and spurred social, military, and political change. |
The summer of '67 still lives in my mind. Do I ever feel old now.

Here's the original version if you wanna listen and remember...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_HhwinPw-M I also loved that song. I was born in the 1970s, not 1960s but my family had a German nanny at age 5 until my teens. She had these "photo album" catalogy-thingies filled with 45 speed records in them. This song was one of them and I loved listening to it as a young girl. This would be 1975. |
