How does one go about making a colony of a fraternity...???

It depends on the policies and procedures of both your campus and the national organization you are petitioning for colony status. I do know for my fraternity, it takes an interest group of at least 12 individuals to get something going, plus a review of the campus by our national organization to see if conditions on the campus warrant a new organization. I wish you luck - being a founding father is something to be proud of, and it will take a lot of work and effort on your part, but is well worth the personal investment.

I'm glad to see a post about this. I just received word that we are having a meeting at my univ to see about starting a sorority colony. I am very excited that there will finally be a sorority out there for ME!! I was curious, though, when does a colony become an actual chapter? How does that part work?

Additionally, any advice from other founders out there??

Pinoy, "chartering" (becoming a chapter) usually occurs after meeting certain international GLO's Headquarters minimum expectations (sometimes called Standards for Chartering) that include membership numbers, campus involvement, cumulative colony GPA, community service, and various other requirements - the university may also have additional requirements to be met. When you go to the organizational meeting - be sure to ask PLENTY of these questions - the more you know, the better informed decision you can make. Also, from observing a recent colonization of both a fraternity and sorority here locally, don't be discouraged if the number of people who intially show up are low - if you sincerely desire to make the effort - you WILL see results. The first fraternity organization meeting for the new colony only drew 5 people, the colony started three months later with almost 30. The sorority started with a similar small number at the informational meeting, but began the colony with over 50 members. Good luck!

My chapter recieved our charter just a short while ago, and I'd be glad to share my experience! For my sorority, it takes a year of being a colony to become a chapter. During the colony period, the prospective chapter has to work hard on establishing itself, just as any established chapter would, by organazing and implementing rush, philanthropy projects, information sessions for university officials, establishing a chapter advisor, to name a few goals. All of these things are a way for prospective members to bond, and learn about the organization (history, founders, etc.).

Thanks to the replies. We had a great turn out. Nearly 20 girls and we are having another interest meeting later this week. I am so excited. I now see we have a long road ahead of us and I can't wait to submerse myself in it all!!!

It is a shame that this trad got so little play action as I started a local on campus with other National houses. I set it up to affiliate with aNational but did not know which one. thank God, It was LXA, I have never looked back after 36 yrs.

If you don't try then you will never know if you would have succeeded!
