Man and Woman of the Year
 

Time magazine annually names their "man" of the year.

Who, in your honest opinion deserves the coveted title of:

1. Man of the Year
2. Woman of the Year

Alright. Now, you I have to think about this one...

Man of the Year: Michael Jackson for his performance as the dirty old and fresh man during the 30th anniversary special. Did he touch that girl's booty? My runner up: Tavis Smiley. For pressing forward in spite of his untimely and unfair dismissal from BET.

Woman of the Year: The woman of the year for me is Hillary Clinton who told everyone to "forget about it" and vote for her. Her ability to fit in with New Yorkers and to stand up to the NY political establishment gets her my vote.

Now, if it must be an African-American..my vote is for Mrs. "King of R&B", Whitney Houston. No one was talked about more on this site and by most of Black America than her.

My pick for Man of the Year would be U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The Man deserved it too.

As for the woman of the year, I'll have to get back with yall on that one.

Now that the Time Person of the Year has been announced this thread has new meaning. In case you missed it, Mayor Guilani
(sp?..I'm a TX grl) of NY is the 2001 Person of the Year. With all he did to lead NY, as well as America through the tough times following 9/11 I think he is a good choice.

However, pre-9/11 I would selected Houston Mayor Lee. P. Brown, who I guess would have really been person of the last 2 or 3 years because he has REALLY help revitalize our downtown..believe me it needed it.

Now, I suppose I support Time Magazine's selection. Rudy G. was such a great leader throughout this tragedy..and didn't he just make George W. look like a schlump?

It's interesting how quickly we forgot about Gilliani's pre-tragedy characteristics....I.E. **RACIST**

Anyhoo.... I think that the male of the year should go to: Tom Joyner,he has mad tremendous strides in our community

Woman of the Year: Maxine Waters ,she kept her composure during the presidential election scandal, and continued to make profound contributions to our communty as well :) :)

Wow, Sincere, my bad...It's not that I forgot, I'd just never heard that..I knew he was a cheating husband, but that's about it. What exactly has he done that was racist, or what policies did he advocate that basically were? I hate beign ignorant of things. Actually, later on in the day after I posted I thought of someone else I'd like to hold the title, Person of the Year. I think Condoleeza Rice is deserving, she is basically running this show. People named her as one of the 25 most interesting people and said she is closer and more advising to G.W. than Sec. of State Colin Powell....wow!

One didn't nor doesn't have to wait on TIme to decide who its Man or Woman of the Year is. We all have seen or heard of people who may not be as famous as the Mayor of DC, NY or Houston who could be given this honor.

I started the thread to see who the people of GC thought should be recognized. The person didn't have to be famous. The person could have been somone in their respective community who has done great things, but may not get the recognition of the national or even the local media.

Don't always "wait and see" what others are going to do or say. Take the initiative and do and say "your" own thing.

i have an issue w/guiliani being named person of the year. granted, he has been on his best behavior publicly, since 9/11. however, people seem to have a short memory as to his other actions. besides having his mistress live(at one time) w/him in gracie mansion, he has publicly supported the nypd in instances where they shouldn't have been supported, especially those involving them committing illegal acts versus non-caucasians. also, he hasn't shown a commitment to improving the public school system in ny.

time magazine sold out to the masses. their criteria for selecting man of the year has been in place for years. it goes to the man or woman who has has the greatest impact on the world, good or bad. while i'm definitely not supporting the "cause" of osama bin laden and his followers, the events on 9.11.01 changed the world for present generations and those to come.

I am a firm believer that what happens to us, dims in importance to how we react to what happens to us. I believe it was Thoreau, but I am not sure, who said, "What lies ahead us and what lies behind us are small matters compared to what lies inside of us." With that said, I agree that Osama Bin Laden and his cohort of cowards changed the world, but more important to me, are the people who are working hard now to personify Maya Angelou's poem "Still I Rise". That is why I agree that Giulani, at least for his role in America's recovery, is a deserving candidate of the title. His personal life I cannot speak for, his racism I detest, but his positive and resiliant role in the respone to this tragedy is undeniable.

Osama Bin Laden did have a great impact on the world, but so much more a profound impact will be our beliefs, our lifestyle, our spirit, triumphing and soaring in the wake of unthinkable tragedy. How much more impact will watching freedom endure, seeing the Twin Towers rebuilt, Arab-Americans not discriminated against, airplanes flying and our economy recovering have on the world? The effects, monetarily and emotionally, of these positive actions is unimaginable. I agree with Time Magazine, OBL is too small a man to deserve such a title. I don't think they sold out. I believe naming OBL would have been selling out...to the devil.

Osama who? If we truly want the person who had the greatest impact on the world this year, actually this and any other, I'm going with God, and that's my vote until eternity.

Again, I concur with stillwater15. We must ask ourselves exquiste5... Did Giuliani really do anything out of the ordinary? If you were in his position wouldn't you have done the same thing??? It seems to me that he (sad enough as it is to say), capitalized off of the tragedy if anything....(he was up for re-election you know), and succeeded in aiding many people into forgetting about his post September 11th actions. Is this all a coincidence? Nothing is, but I'll leave all of my conspiarcy theories for another post. Until then PEACE :)
