What would you do?

What would you do if your chapter hazed in it's development process?

33girl 12-11-2001 10:52 PM

Do you (not you personally, the universal "you") feel it was hazing, or do the new members feel it was hazing?

Is it physically or psychologically dangerous? Or is it an activity like interviews or signatures that was formerly OK, and is now called hazing?

What will be the consequences if the national org is notified?

Just points to ponder.

SigEpVegan 12-14-2001 08:36 PM

Hazing is hazing. I see your point but to be devious and lie about your practices then it doesn't promote honesty.

onekeythatbindsus 12-24-2001 11:33 AM

I think it doesn't matter if you think it's hazing of if your new members think it's hazing.
If ANYONE, brother or new member is uncomfortable it's hazing.
Hazing serves no purpose at all in a fraternity. I was the new member chairman for Kappa Kappa Gamma and I worked very hard to restructure our new member process to elimate hazing. Getting rid of Hazing is difficult, but you have to think - what purpose is it serving? Is this intimidation? Are there better ways to get our values across? Is this really preaching our values? Are we gaining respect from our new members through this?
The "respect" you get from hazing events isn't respect at all, it's simply fear and intimidation. It's not the values you want taught and lived by in your organization. If your organization is hazing, it's not living up to what it could be. It's hard to understand why a scavenger hunt is hazing - but imagine what could happen if it got out of hand...imagine if something was stolen and that new member was arrested...imagine if you lost your chater becuase of a silly scavenger hunt - imagine if you lost membership in an organization that you poured your heart in because of a silly event. This are things you need to think about when it comes to hazing. It's not an issue of losing members because they can't handle the pressure, it's an issue of losing your charter and everything you loved about SigEp, or Kappa or whatever your organization is.
SigEpVegan, I totally agree with the bit about honesty, if you preach honesty and loyalty, how do you expect your new members to learn this if you don't fully embrace it and practice it.

Thanks for the chance to share my feelings! As the old new member chairman for Kappa, I've put a lot of thought into this subject... :)

Greek Love,
Casey

You should knokw

Talk to the people on your e-board. If you have a problem with something that your development VP is doing, chances are someone else in the chapter does too. Talk to your president about it and maybe he could shead some light on the matter.

SigEpVegan 02-04-2002 01:43 AM

OK your president dosn't like it but he tolerates it because the entire chapter likes these traditions. The some of the VP's representing the e board are also on the standards board, notably the VP of development. Now what do you do.

sigep_165 02-04-2002 02:14 AM

Realistic

First thing-- You president is not a very good leader if he is afraid to go against the house for what he thinks is right. Presidents are suppose to be the leaders of a house and not the followers. Then you may let you president know that he and the VP of Member Development would be the two that got arrested if your campus or police found out about the hazing. How many of the VP's are on standards. It should only be one -- The Guide. If it is more than that then your house is breaking national bylaws. what chapter are you from? one thing that you could do is to talk to your regional director. he would be willing to discuss the entire thing with you.

SigEpVegan 02-04-2002 09:36 AM

Don't worry that's what I did. I went to my regional director. Just making sure that someone agreed. We are under brotherhood review right now, and I am not the most popular brother right now.

oooooh yea, we got the big man on campus right here folks. Not only are they the best on campus, not only do they throw the best parties, not only do they have the hottest girls running around, but they even have the sigma chis, sigma nus and the other frats on campus trying to take care of their dirty work!

The clock has started, and the entire time you look like an idiot.
Do you really think that other fraternities would solicit illegal acts to another fraternity over a matter of hazing? Do you really think that they would put themselves into that kind of danger over a matter they aren't directly involved with? Hell, if your chapter hazed those guys, and they told, deal with it. By going after them, and doing untold bad things like you the cool guy, campus thug will do, don't you think you will be in just a bit more trouble now?

grow a brain, grow up, follow your own advice and maybe quit!

sigep860 02-10-2002 09:39 PM

my previous post was in haste....imagine if everything you have, everything you love, the future and hope of your fraternity--GONE we are the best on campus and we still make our presence known...

TO the brother that turned his own chapter in i wish you sincere fortune with your hazing situation for it has killed ours...much sig ep love....860

SigEpVegan 02-11-2002 12:32 AM

yeah it was a hard decision and our chapter is paying for it, but I feel we would have not survived much longer under our circumstances before. We are hurt and we need to get together and move ahead. Things are comming together and relations, although still rocky between my brothers and I, are slowly begining to mend.

Much love to my brothers, may you always remember the duties of every SigEp.

why does your chapter have exec. board members sitting on standards???

SigEpVegan 02-15-2002 05:10 PM

you know I'm trying to figure that one out as well.

ferrit_spe 02-15-2002 09:41 PM

i must apoligize, i thought that i knew the national bylaws pretty well, but i had no clue that it was a national bylaw that exec. members could not be on standards either. i always figured it was an unwritten rule in our chapter. we have always tried to not have exec members on standards but our vp of recruitment is also our guide, and he is doing a hell of a job at both of them.
