pledged book question

I could have sworn there was a thread, albeit old, about this book but oh well.

So I'm not sure what possessed me to check the book out from the library, but I did. Now I'm curious about some things.

Did anyone ever figure out 1. what school she was "undercover" at? (I have a feeling I know which CA school she is talking about though) and 2. what the sororities were?

I'm just curious if it was ever "figured" out.

Yes, this book has been discussed a lot here. I think the longest thread is here: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...hlight=Robbins

I just read this book rather recently myself. It was at a bargain price from one of the booksellers on Amazon.com, and couldn't resist it.

The school has never been confirmed, but one of the schools that was considered was my alma mater. As I read the book years ago, much of it did sound familiar. There are quite a few details in the story that are very indicative of my campus at that time. Also, during the time the author would have been writing the book, she was spotted on my campus in the journalism building and even spoke to a group of journalists. The Robbins sightings seemed a little too convenient for it not to be my school. But I also wondered later if she had used a couple of different schools and made composite characters. Who knows?

I picked it up at a grocery store for $1.00!! It was actually part of a "buy a book for a dollar, it will be donated to Prostate Cancer Research", so I couldn't go wrong.

I haven't finished it, but the book HAS to be a composite of different universities, SEC and non-SEC. So far, it's been worth the dollar. I'm glad I didn't pay more for it!

I just decided a "wth" when I was at the library. Thank god I didn't pay for it.

IndianaSigKap, I thought she said she was at a CA school. I figured it was either USC or UCLA.

Thanks for the link. When I did a search engine, random other threads came up. I was like "okay greekchat that isn't what I asked for". :D

Worth the dollar that goes to charity.

I don't remember reading that Robbins ever disclosed the state/school.

That's correct. It was a southern-ish sorority culture school with housing that has deferred recruitment, provided she didn't deliberately obfuscate the facts. As I recall, there was a lot of speculation it was SMU because she spent some time specifically talking about SMU in the book even though she claimed the school wasn't SMU. I always had a hunch it was Vanderbilt.

IndianaSigKap 07-17-2012 12:19 AM

I remember SMU being kicked around a lot too. I have a friend who is convinced that it's a composite mixture of SMU and Indiana. She attended Purdue but has traveled quite a bit as a volunteer for her sorority and actually took the time to write out details that she thought were telling. The deferred rush being one. How many large scale competitive recruitments occur in the winter? That detail alone would narrow down the list quite a bit.
