Is getting a sorority girl to write you a rec for a fraternity a bad idea?

I'm probably the first person to attend this school in the Midwest that I am going to from my prep school back east. I am really interested in Greek life but I literally do not know a soul at this school much less a fraternity brother. My best friend's sister is a tri delt at vandy. Would getting her to write me a rec be a bad idea?

Sorry if the title is phrased poorly

Well, it probably won't help you a bit and will look silly, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm not certain how recs for fraternities work, but for NPC sororities, you need a rec written from a member of that particular organization. If you were a woman going through NPC recruitment, your friend's sister could write you the letter or recommendation for Tri-Delt, but you'd still need to secure letters for each of the other chapters from members of those respective groups.

Ok thanks. I thought as much

If you do an online search and find out what fraternities are represented on your soon to be campus, see if some of those are also on the same campus as your best friend's sister. She may know some of those guys and maybe could persuade some of them to meet/write a reference for you. Greeks know other Greeks in groups outside their own.

It would be a terrible idea-don't do it. A recommendation for a sorority or fraternity needs to come from someone who is a member of that organization. I can write recommendations for ZTA-I cannot write recommendations for any other sororities.

As others have suggested, find out the fraternities on your campus and then ask the young woman if she knows guys on her campus in those same fraternities, and if so, would she mind asking them to write you recommendations for their fraternities.

Or find out if anyone you know -- teachers, family friends, coaches, clergy, etc. -- is a member of a fraternity on your campus and ask them if their fraternities do recommendations and, if so, if they'll do one for you.

Yes. It would be extremely strange for a fraternity system that does not use recs to receive one.

How is this even remotely related to your situation?

You're teetering the "troll" line.

At first I thought you could get a rec from somebody in any sorority that knows you and give it to every sorority, not just the one they are specifically in. My gosh i didn't realize using five harmless words could make me teeter the troll line. Any other issue you have with me i'd appreciate it if you could message me about it instead. Thanks.

So, out of the 220,121 rec threads that exist on Greekchat, you thought the one about fraternity recruitment that had one sentence related to your situation was best? Ooooooooooook.

And this is a discussion board. I'm going to post as I see fit. No need to message you for any and all questions.

You know what you need to do? Ask this "friend" who told you that getting in her group was no problem to explain NPC recruitment to you. You obviously have no clue about how to go about doing this as you have committed so many faux pas's that I can't even keep up with them all.
Then, do a search here for recs and the school you will attend. Both will give you a lot of information. THEN, if you have questions, come here. You're a junior in college. You should know how to do research by now without asking everyone else to tell you what you need to know.

It's all your other posts that put you over the troll line.

Titchou 06-24-2012 08:02 PM

Sweetie, you started all this by your screen name. Everyone reacted negatively because we knew that it was inappropriate and that out NPHC sisters would not appreciate what you did. You should have immediately gone back, deleted your posts that weren't QFP'd and started over with an acceptable screen name. But you chose to continue on. Well, as we say where I come from, bless your heart!

Titchou 06-24-2012 08:23 PM

It is possible for you to edit all the verbiage from any post of your own.

QFP = quoted for posterity (quoted within their post so you can't delete)

And, you really should watch your grammar as well. "I did not no" should be "I did not know" and I can cite other examples. The people at your school troll these boards and might be able to identify you. You need be circumspect.

DrPhil 06-24-2012 10:15 PM

I do not speak for all NPHCers but I am not bothered by the screenname because the person is not interested in the NPHC.

If this person is for real, she told you that she is socially awkward so these back and forths are know (:p) shock. If this person is not for real, this is hardly entertaining enough. Do better.

I came to make sure that everyone told him it would be a terrible idea. Faith in greekchat partially restored
