Sophomore Quota
Forgive me if this has been asked before but I've tried searching through the threads on here to have this answered. My school has a sophomore quota (and since I'm rushing as a sophomore, i thought this would be beneficial), however, I've read a lot on here that sophomore quotas aren't the same as regular quotas. Or something along that lines, meaning, that the sororities don't really need to fill it. My school's recruitment page states this about sophomore quotas: "An upperclassmen quota is a seperate quota that is used to specifically place upperclassmen Potential New Members. It makes the recruiment process more friendly!" So I thought it was like an extra added onto the regular quota. Like if the sororities had a quota of 60 and then they would have a sophomore quota of 10 or something that they would also fill. Is this right or do I have it wrong? Aren't sororities' goals to fill their quotas?

An upper classman quota exists to encourage chapters to take uppermen. It is not mandatory, however, that they do so.

I am also interested in rushing my sophomore year as well. I was no so sure about rushing my freshman year, but I'm definitely interested now. I attend Ole Miss and rush is extremely competitive here. I know rushing as a sophomore can be somewhat a disadvantage, but is there any advice for increasing my chances of receiving a bid?

A sophomore or upperclass quota is for the benefit of the sophomores or upperclassmen, not for the sorority. |
But wouldn't you say in general that sororities with upper class quota do fill them?

I would say they generally do fill both quotas. The main reasons being the campus perception of them if they don't (not that all groups care about that) and the pressure from their national organization to pledge to quota. A lot of awards are based on getting to quota so those groups and chapters have other pressures on them to fill all quotas.....though there are those who snub their noses at "having" to fill quota. They got who they wanted and that's all they want...no matter what anyone thinks.

So, in general, I think any campus with a decent number (say, more than 5% of PNM's) of sophomores/juniors rushing should do an upperclassman quota. |

I also was under the impression that UC quota didn't really figure in the math of PNMs finishing pref (or whichever round it's set after) divided by number of sororities...that they were "extra." But if that is the case, maybe the HQs should impress on the women that excellent PNMs come in all classes, instead of fostering the "freshmen are best" mentality. (Then we wouldn't need a UC quota.) |

Not trying to be snarky, 33Girl, but since you aren't a member of all 26 NPC groups, you can't know whether a national organization pressures them to fill all quotas. Mine happens to track that. Yours may not. It just depends. That's why I said "generally" and "that not all groups care about that."

^^^The point I think that 33 was trying to make was just that sophomores aren't guaranteed a bid just because their school uses an upperclassman quota. Which is what the PNM who posted here seems to be wondering about.
