Sophomore Rush
 

I regret not rushing in the fall of my freshman year, but I rushed during the spring for a few sororities. I am a Chi Omega legacy who is very involved on and off campus, and my GPA is a 2.64 (the university requirement is a 2.5). I declined a bid from a sorority (they offered bids to everyone who rushed) in the spring, but now I am worried that I won't get any bids at all in the fall despite being a legacy.

I panicked a little when I read my school requirements for rush: "it is recommended that all new member classes and all subsequent qualified
members achieve an overall qualified member grade point average (GPA) of
2.75 or higher" in the Statement of Expectation for Greek life on my campus. My high school GPA was a 3.49, and even then, I was very involved in extracurricular activities. Although I had a good high school GPA and I am very involved, would I be kicked out of rush (or something along those lines) with my current GPA? Or am I just worrying too much?

No, they don't "kick people out of rush" for grades, but you could be cut from all of the chapters early. You are absolutely right to be concerned. Is there a reason for your GPA to be so low that can be explained and justified?

Depending on the competitiveness of your school,

(strike one) a sophomore
(strike two) with a very low GPA
(strike three) on her second time through rush

will likely have an extremely difficult time in recruitment. We have no way to know if your legacy status can help you, but I wouldn't count on it.

You had your shot at Greek life, you turned it down. You very well may not get another one. Something smart alecky about choices and consequences comes to mind....

Use your time to study. Get your grades up. As the wise people here on GC advise, "Pledge the library"!

So...let me get this straight:

a.) You are going in as a Sophmore (it only gets harder from here on out)
b.) You have a 2.64 GPA (recruitment needing at least a 2.5 GPA)
c.) You turned down a bid to a sisterhood that saw beyond your HORRIBLE (yes--HORRIBLE) GPA because they "hand out bids to everyone" :rolleyes:
d.) The Statement of Expectation expresses interest in all students maintaining a 2.75 GPA and you have a 2.64 GPA

Is this all right? So, you just BARELY meet the requirements and you are a sophmore (meaning it doesn't exactly get much easier from here on out). You are a major grade risk who thinks that being involved on and off campus should make up for such bad grades coupled with being a legacy to one of the chapters on campus? Ummm....yeah--Good luck with that, sweetheart! ;) As my NPC sister said earlier, you should go and "pledge the library" and stop wasting the time of my other NPC sisters by going through recruitment and thinking you deserve so much better than you actually do. You'd be lucky (especially with those statistics) to be a member of ANY of the NPC sororities on campus but, you think you are too good. Get over yourself!

Why did you decline the bid? It sounds like you are looking down on them via the entire "they offered bids to everyone who rushed." Isn't it possible everyone was a great PNM? Sheesh!

There is nothing you can do about your GPA now and waiting longer is probably not the best idea no matter where you go. I would suggest working on your conversation skills (always a great idea no matter how skilled you are) and making sure your outfits are very polished. If your username is any indication of where you go, none of the schools with a ram as a mascot are super competitive. However, that does not mean it will be an easy ride for you especially as a sophomore with a poor GPA. Look at finding recommendation letters.

ETA: Just noticed all the other threads. Work on recs for all chapters. Being a legacy doesn't guarantee a bid and, in some places, it may mean absolutely nothing. Look at every single chapter instead of just your legacy or the ones your friends are in. Some places having friends may mean a lot, but most places a few friends in a chapter can mean nothing in membership selection.
