Rushing as a sophomore transfer
Hi there everyone:) I have been looking around on the site for a while and I decided that since I am transferring schools and looking to rush a sorority in the fall this would be a good place to start.
Im transferring from a very small liberal arts school to a larger state school and since I did not have the option of rushing at my old school I would like to try at my new one. The only thing is that even though credit wise I will be counted as a sophomore I really should be a junior, meaning that I will be 20 coming into the school in the fall. So of course I am pretty nervous. Im worried that this will put me at a disadvantage for rush too. I would think that since I am credit wise a sophomore that I would be more likely to get a bid but do you think that the sororities would take how old I am into their decision? More than likely I will be staying an extra year or semester so I do not know if it would be a problem or not. If anyone can give me any tips/advice I would appreciate it. Thanks so much! |
I think it really depends on how competitive rush at your new school will be. I would use the search function to search the name of your new school and the word "recruitment" or "rush."
Also, as a sophomore/junior, think about what you have on your resume to help set you apart from the other PNMs. Do you have a solid GPA? What kinds of leadership roles or activities were you involved with at your previous school? |
I've actually tried searching my new school a lot of times and it never comes up. Its a state school but it isnt huge so it's not very well known :/

Try searching using Google and the words "greekchat" "recruitment" (or rush) and the name of your school.

I could not find a specific thread for my school but if it helps I will be going to Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
Thank you though! |
As long as you don't get fixated on one chapter and decide it's the only one you want, and you aren't a total trainwreck, you shouldn't have a problem. Many students in all of the SSHE schools are in the same situation with credits vs. age. Good luck!

University Greek Life Website
Search the university greek life website. Although your specific question probably cannot be answered by reading the website, take a look!

Everything I've ever heard about Shippensburg is that they are pretty laid back. You will likely be at a disadvantage compared to a freshman, but this isn't like the SEC.

Thanks everyone! It makes me feel better to know that other people are in the same situation so that calms me down a little haha. And from what I have read I am hoping other transfers will be rushing too.

The freshman/sophomore debate is the same as the fall to spring recruitment argument. What does it matter your age if you're a good student and make friends with the girls? It's really sad when I hear about sororities that won't do spring recruitment, why should reaching "quota" be enough? I believe it's a lie personally because there is this stigma about spring being easy. Yes, fewer girls but they still do the same things as new members. Also, if you don't like them initially why would they be so great in the Spring? That is just another comment I've heard, "try for a bid in the Spring" again like the Spring is the free pass. The 5 or 10 Spring girls become your sister yet there is always the animosity. It really is my pet peeve on things like this. I'm an advocate for deferred rush as it allows you to get to know the person better and possible cuts down the crazy level. As for guys, I think we could all agree Spring rush would be so much better because it leaves the guys who aren't binge drinking or falling the 1st semester.

What animosity?

 If you make quota - you can't do Spring Recruitment unless you are under total. Even if they are under total, some chapters will not do a spring class for just three or four girls, because it takes a lot of work to put together a new member period and hold initiation. |
The last three posts are POINTLESS to the OP's situation. Obviously the people blabbing (which is not carnation lol) have no idea about the school or the style of rush. She came here to get answers and reassurance, which she has gotten from PEOPLE ACTUALLY FAMILIAR WITH THE SCHOOL. So if you want to get into a big deferred vs. prefreshman rush debate, put it somewhere else and don't clog up her thread or worse yet, make her worry about something that has nothing to do with what will actually be happening to her. KTHXBYE.
