Hey everyone! I'm going to be PNM at the University of Alabama in 2013! I'm still a junior now but I can't wait! Message me if you have in tips or suggestions for recruitment.

There are lots of tips in the Sorority Recruitment forum, some Bama specific. Check it out when you are able.

Mevara 05-23-2012 05:41 PM

Have you even been accepted to the University of Alabama?!

sorority2017 05-24-2012 02:18 PM

Not yet but I'm pretty sure I'm almost positive I will be accepted but I can't apply until July.

That is a little presumptuous, hopefully you don't go into recruitment with that same attitude.

Well, she's also giving recruitment advice to PNMs, so . . . .

Woah there..I'm glad that you are taking such a great intrest in me so much that you seem to know everywhere that I post, it's a real self-esteem booster to know that people know who you are. BUT I actually know some stuff about recruitment and sorority life as my mother is a member of a sorority and I have friends that are members as well. So sorry to seem "presumptuous" about knowing that I can get into Alabama I've just been told not to worry about being rejected because quote from my guidence counselor "it's a done deal you will get in, start worring about your social life there". I absolutly do not think I am entitled to or even should recieve a bid on bid day. I am excited about joining after listening to my mother talk about her experiances and I want to prepare early so that I can give myself the best possible chance during rush week. So sorry if I offended anyone, didn't mean to.

Yuuuuuup. You're a total shoe-in for Bama...

sorority2017 05-24-2012 08:50 PM

You don't know anything about me..my grades, SAT scores, extra-curriculars, or even my name?

This is one of the MOST annoying things anyone can EVER say! It reminds me of when I was in the military and I would deal with military spouses and they would say, "Well, I know because my husband/ wife is in the military so..." If you want to turn off sorority women really fast--the way that military talk turned off those of us who were in the military (it also annoys my fiance who served active duty in the Navy), then keep up that attitude that you know what is what because so-and-so is a member. Work on getting into Bama before saying you will be joining a sorority.

Oh.. Well.. Since your high school guidance counselor said it's a sure thing, it MUST be so.

Nothing in life is guaranteed. Seems that he/she should know that. Assuming they actually said this to you, they're setting you (and possibly other students) up for failure.

Alright to set the record straight I AM NOT SAYING I KNOW EVERYTHING OR THAT I WILL GET A BID all I said was I can give advice if I happen to know the answer. Also I am working on getting in. I'm preparing for my finals and I am continuing my sports, job, and volunteer job. Maybe sorority girls aren't what my mom says or maybe it's you wanna be ones??? Because last time I check sorority woman were classy and nice and respectful not nasty and tear people down at the first chance they have. If you all are so knowledgeable then use it in a useful way. You are grown woman.

I'm not a wannabe. I'm a member. I'm giving you GOOD advice. Don't say, "I know this because so-and-so is my friend/ family member/ significant other.." because you will turn a lot of people off. Sorority women are classy. It's just that this "classy" sorority woman chose to give you good advice so that you don't get torn up in sorority recruitment or other aspects of your life. I am nice and not tearing you down. If that wasn't a "classy" answer then I'm not sure what would be.

But you ARE saying that you WILL get accepted to Bama.

Just focus on high school right now and all the things that go along with senior year. While it's good to prepare and read, read, read through the Recruitment forum on this site (and get recs in a timely manner, if necessary), you shouldn't have to worry about how your social life will pan out in college. Live in the now. That's the best advice I could give anyone.

Just take it from us, 2017. You may have greek friends, you may be a legacy. But giving advice about recruitment (aside from what ASTalumna said above, like how you are preparing for your own recruitment in the next 15 months), is not in your best interest. Until you go through it personally and have a personal knowledge (not hearsay) of how recruitment works, then just sit back and learn. That would be like me giving advice to someone aspiring to go on American Idol, only I don't know much about music aside from what my ears like to hear. There are more than enough people on here who can give very VERY accurate advice. Enjoy the summer, enjoy your senior year, keep your grades up, keep involved in your community, and make certain you actually get into Alabama. Then begin networking with other sorority women from whom you may ask for recs this time next year. :)
