Georgia Tech: Beta Theta Pi Suspended for Hazing

LaneSig, Kevin, and other interested featherless bipedal tetrapods on GC:

At Georgia Tech, Beta Theta Pi has been suspended for two years, reportedly for hazing. As the article on the AJC's site (see below) mentions, Beta HQ agrees with the university's actions.

Beta HQ said in a letter, “hazing has permeated the chapter.”

Why does who do what? Why do some chapters haze? Why do schools and/or HQs take the action they take?
