Rushing against Locals
I need some ideas about how to set up a good IFC rush program
that is able to compete with a local fraternity that just started on our campus (they were kicked out of IFC..pulled charter) Please give me ideas thanks |
What are you up against? IF its only one chapter their biggest thing is going to be how fun they are because they don't fall under insurance rules.
Your counter argument is that you are even more fun because you belong to a larger greek system that sponsors a bunch of fun events that the sub rosa group can't take part in, assuming you have large events on campus. As well as mixers and exchanges, assuming the sororities won't mix with the sub rosa group. Anyway, if you give us more details of your situation then we might be able to help you more. |
dd just what are you afraid of? The stronger the Greek Coummunity is on campus the better!:)
The first thing you do is show what a great group of people you are and the next is what you can offer them! I am in a quadry as we have crappy house ( building ) but a great bunch of guys! We are next to the smallest chapter on campus! My guys think it is because of the building. The building is only part of it. The Guys in the chaptr are the main part! At one time we were one of the strongest chapters on campus and we will be once again! Never forget that people make the house or chapter!:) |
There are all different degrees of "unrecognized"...from the school doesn't care if they're there, they just don't support them financially, to "underground" groups that everyone knows are there but the administration doesn't admit it, to the silliness of some of the Northeast schools where you can be expelled for being a member.
Here's ddalne's other post. There is only one chapter that is underground that we have to deal with. In terms of mixing with sororities, that chapter is slowly losing it's activities/associations with sororities. The things that concern me are a.) they do not have to abide by "dry" drush rules b.)they do not have to follow any of the rushing date restrictions imposed by a formal rush. As far as a, if someone only joins a group because they're the only ones who have wet rush, they will fold quickly. And b....I know you have probably heard this a million times before, but rush really is 24/7/365. Even if you cannot give out bids in between formal rush times, if you build a relationship with someone and let him know you would like him in the next pledge class, he's not going to turn around and join some other group just because they will give him a bid that day. If he would, he's a dork. :p By the way ddlane, are these national or local groups or a mixture? |
what do you mean by national or local's being mixed?
|
im a retard.....we have 4 national, and one local
|
I would just like to say that the 2 local sororities and 1 local fraternity at the school that I went to always participated in more activities than the nationals. All of the locals participate in formal rush, greek week, and any other greek event. There are 11 fraternities and 5 sororities at another school in town that our entire greek system is close with and my sorority does mixers regularly with about 8 of those organizations. My sorority is very close to the other fraternities and sororities on campus, with the exception of one, and we try plan a mixer with each organization at least one every sememster.
I joined my sorority because the other sororities were either snotty to me during rush or because I didn't seem to fit in with them. Rush/recruitment is about getting to know people and forming possible new friendships...it's not about showing off. The people in the organization is what makes it successful. If you have a bunch of slackers, give them a swift kick in the a$$ :) I know that there are major structural differences between locals and nationals but to me it never made a difference. People need to join groups based on where they feel like they fit in. Ok, I'll shut up now :) Have a nice day :) |
I think, and ddalne please correct me if wrong, they are a local group because they are not recognized, meaning they lost their charter, so they no longer a National.
So they are local a little differently than one that is created from the ground up. they are like if your chapter lost its charter but everyone kept meeting anyway . . . what is the university policy on Locals? Can they useschool rooms etc? |
they can still play intermurals as a group, they just cannot play
under their chapter (or ex-chapter) name, b/c according to the school rules they are not permitted to meet as a group. I think I have a pretty good idea of what to set up for IFC and such, but I am always looking for suggestions. The judicial affairs chairman at our university has said this group is not permitted to run rush events, or advertise them, so I have some confidence that there wil not be too much impact on the new people rushing the IFC fraternities |
