Teacher Appreciation Day

Our politicians may be launching an attack on teachers lately, but I really appreciate those teachers who have made a significant difference in my children's lives. Thank you for all you do for our society. I consider your profession to be the most important profession in our culture.

Tonight my elementary teacher husband and I are going to attend an excellence dessert with our daughter and her French teacher. The top 10% of each local graduating class is invited to attend, and bring the teacher who most influenced them over the years. There will be over 300 people there, and I'm really looking forward to seeing all these hard-working teachers and students honored for their efforts!

I really like this idea. I think that everyone has at least one teacher from all their years in school that made a difference academically speaking. For me, it was my eighth grade English/Social Studies teacher. She had previously taught high school English, so that is what she taught us. We had a reading list of 15+ novels (I found the actual list a few years ago). I also had to write a 20 page term paper with full bibliography and footnotes. Even though my mom did the typing and the editing, it made freshman English easy and I never had any problems with reading or writing in the future. Math was another story ...

WOW!! Why am I just seeing this thread?! Thank you much for thinking of us. :) People don't understand how difficult it is to force feed information to students who just DON'T WANT IT! :mad: But those few who actually DO want it, makes me feel so much more encouraged to take on a position like this.

I taught middle school choir for three years, and quit in 2010 to work on MORE graduate studies. :p But I found myself missing it, strangely enough, ... considering how much I abhorred it at the time. :o

Now, however, just this week, I have accepted another job offer as Music Teacher/Choral Director for a local school district, and I couldn't be more excited to get started. :D

We had a similar banquet for the top 10 from ten area high schools (full meal though, not just desserts). Sadly, they didn't do the most influential teacher piece of that. I'm going to suggest it though :) I think hypo would have a hard time picking just one! She's had some great supportive teachers.

They used to do a full dinner, but you know how the economy is in Michigan. Cutbacks everywhere....

It was a very nice event. The students received a medallion to wear at graduation, and the guest speaker was the Executive Director of the College Access Network in Michigan, which helps students pursue post-secondary opportunities, fill out college applications and the FAFSA, etc. Their goal is to increase the percentage of college graduates in Michigan in the "can't count on a great lifelong union job at one of the Big 3 anymore" new economic reality in our state. This operation is like a steamroller...really taking off.

As far as inviting an educator, it tends to work itself out because each person can only be asked by one student...so all the AP teachers, really fantastic 5th or 6th grade teachers, etc. get invited by someone. A couple teachers were their coaches for a sport the student played. No one invited either of the band directors this year, though, which I thought was odd. Someone else invited the choir director, so my daughter didn't have to feel badly about that. She "reserved" her French teacher/also the NHS advisor last year, "just in case".

This is pretty nice to see after the roughest day I've had with students all year. Glad we're appreciated by others, even if students (11th and 12th graders) couldn't figure out how to act like humans today :)

It's nice to know that there are people out there who do value what I and other teachers do.

Well the juniors have no excuse, but the seniors well can't blame them, senioritis has kicked in full steam ahead. :D
