Blacklist?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if a blacklist is actually real. I went to a few rush events this spring and the brothers liked me except for one kid who said he'd put me on the blacklist. Apparently if i get put on the list then i can't pledge to any frat at my school. My friends told me he can't do that and doesn't have that power. Just wondering if that's true or not.

Why did this kid tell you that he was going to blacklist you? Did something happen? To quote Leigh Anne Tuohy, "Don't you dare lie to me." Can't help you if you don't tell the truth.

There is a term called "blackballed" that many chapters use. It means that someone in that one chapter voted to not extend you a bid. Depending on the chapter, it may take several members to vote no or blackball you for you to not get a bid.

Yeah to the best of my knowledge there is nothing like that. BUT, if the kid has enough pull, he could probably make a good shot at making sure you have enough negative votes at various fraternities not to get a bid.

basically my friends in the frat messed with him (they were in the same pledge class) and sometimes i did too. Nothing major, changed a facebook status once in a while but he'd get me back too. Thought it was in good fun but he's apparently the type to hold a grudge so he told me he'd put me on the blacklist. I heard he's on our IFC rush, but i have no clue what that is. However, I have alot of friends within the frat and two on the board to decide if i get a bid or not (they told me yes already).

Hopefully it will work out for you. However, just having two friends on the board does not guarantee you a bid. They aren't the only ones who get to decide and the member you pissed off may have more friends on the board than you.

Friendly advice: All of us have heard pnms say, "I've got friends in ABC. I know I'll get in." Having friends in ABC, whether it's a fraternity or sorority, is no guarantee.

I would also clear the air with the guy. In a sincere, not butt kissing way, I'd tell him that I was sorry, didn't mean any harm, and truly apologize for messing with him.

Good luck.

If he's in any sort of power position on IFC, threatening to "blacklist" you should be enough to get him, and very possibly his fraternity, disciplined. If you hear anything from anyone in other fraternities, I would go to the Greek advisor. Most likely he is just blowing smoke. Fraternities don't really interfere with each others' rushing and bidding to the extent sororities do, and this guy saying "don't bid rutrush because I have blacklisted him" would more than likely earn him nothing but a very large laugh in his face.

But seriously...I would think twice about joining a group whose members can't keep brotherly disputes between brothers and instead drag an innocent bystander (you) into them. I know this sounds like a girly pussy answer, but what if these same guys decide it would be fun to "mess with" you?
