Facebook during recruitment?
Would you say its better to keep your facebook completely private during recruitment week, or open (cleaned up of course)? Because I read somewhere that some sororities use facebook as a way to get to know you better
What is your opinion? |
We keep ours private for at least 30 days before recruitment I believe, and then can reactivate them after bid day. We do this because we don't want potential new members to check out everyone's fb before recruitment and end up having a biased opinion of what sorority they want to join before panhellenic recruitment even begins. I like it, personally, considering our recruitment is a few weeks into the semester.

ff, I think she meant from the PNMs side.

I would suggest having it private. Have your profile picture a cute head/upper body shot. It's nice if we are trying to remember you/show you to another sister and can see who you are instead of you and your 50 closest friends.
|
I also wouldn't wait until recruitment to clean it up/make it private.
|
I actually took a few minutes to clean it up a few days ago. I don't really have anything bad on there. I just didn't know which was the right road to go down
|
Just my personal preference as a recruitment advisor -- make it private but keep a few things visible. A clear, recent and flattering photo of yourself, plus your high school or hometown, are helpful.

At what point does a PNM make the fb private? Now? Or is okay to wait until closer to recruitment?

My daughter's is private all the time, with a flattering professional senior picture.

I have all kinds of different settings on my FB page. I play some games and nobody who isn't looking for ways to add points wants to see any of that so I make all that stuff for GAMERS only. Some posts I have for friends, some to family and some to Good Family. Still, just to be sure, I'd completely eliminate anything incriminating (friends of friends who can copy and paste stuff), but I'd still keep a FB resume of sorts publicly available.
|
I always err on the side of private. If it's private, there's nothing for anyone to see and nothing for you to worry about. Personally, I'd rather not have my profile open to the entire world. No one I know has totally open FB. Everyone's different, though.

We WILL look for PNMs on Facebook. I like to see enough on there to determine that IS the PNM in question - high school at least, hometown.

If there is a site for "State U. Class of 2016" and the pnm joins it-which is a fun way to meet future classmates-be careful what you share publicly. My daughter and I had fun every year she was an undergrad reading the naive' comments incoming freshmen would write. Someone usually starts a list of questions featuring "are you going to rush" and inevitably a handful of girls will say "yes...I am going to join ABC!" I have even seen pnms make similar statements on ABC Panhellenic Recruitment 20xx facebook groups. Think, PNMs!! |
