Pi Chi question

I'm not sure if this is an OK question, forgive me if its not. Do Pi Chis have any input into who gets a bid to their chapter? I just found out that a sweet girl who would most likely be a supporter of my daughter will be a Pi Chi this year.

They're not supposed to because they deaffiliate temporarily from their chapters.

DeltaBetaBaby 04-24-2012 12:53 PM

Technically, they are not supposed to, but we all know that many times they do. In any case, worrying about this won't help you at all, so it's really a moot point.

Darn it, thats what I thought the answer would be Carnation. Thanks for answering!

Honestly, if your daughter's friend likes her that much, she can tell her big/little/roommate/someone to keep an eye out. Yeah the Pi Chi won't be in membership selection, but she can set your daughter apart before recruitment.

To be clear, a Pi Chi technically has no vote but in any case, wouldn't have more than one out of what could be 200+ girls, depending on your school. It's not like she can control if the girl gets into a chapter single handedly. And hopefully she doesn't try to sway the rushee's decisions, but I'm sure that happens a lot too.

I would always recommend telling any girl going through rush to behave as though her Pi Chi belongs to "the worst" chapter. Would she say the same things if she knew she could really be hurting that girl's feelings? Because the truth is you really can't tell which girls are in which houses and 18 year old girls can be a little thoughtless in their statements, even if they wouldn't intentionally be bitchy. Best of luck to your daughter!

Are they supposed to be disaffiliated and uninvolved? Sure. Are they always? I'd be lying if I said yes.

It's hard to say if one Pi Chi can really get a PNM into a chapter, as I don't know how MS works in other chapters. I'd assume that one person's word isn't really enough (no matter how awesome someone is.) Especially if you're dealing with competitive recruitment where there are tons of well-connected PNMs going through.

I will tell you that it is in a PNM's best interest to behave as if her Pi Chi is going to run back and tell her chapter everything she says or overhears her saying.

If you're in a situation where XYZ has has to cut a ton of women on the first day, and they don't know much about the pool to make any decisions, it's easy for a Pi Chi to be like "Hey guys, I heard Suzy say ______." That's all they need because they're looking for a way to make that huge cut and what you said makes it really easy to cut you.

Also, Pi Chis talk to each other. If a Pi Chi knows that a PNM in her group is a complete brat, she WILL tell her Pi Chi friends who will tell their own chapters. So even if you think you know (or maybe you do know) what chapter a Pi Chi is in, don't just avoid saying bad things about HER chapter. Avoid trashtalking any group in front of her because chances are good that they will hear about it.

I'm rushing in the fall and what are Pi Chi's and Rho Gamma's. I've read threads with them in it, but I've never found a solid definition. Are they just people who guide you?

KSUViolet06 05-07-2012 01:16 AM

^^They're called different things at different schools. Some use Pi Chi, Rho Gamma, SRC (sorority recruitment counselor), Gamma Chi, etc.

They are women who are chosen from the chapters on campus to help guide PNMs through recruitment. They're meant to also be fair and impartial, so you don't know what chapter they're from (and if you should happen to find out, you're not supposed to "out" them.) They're there to promote Greek Life and help PNMs, not promote their own chapters (if that makes sense.)

They're the women who will be in charge of your groups, give you your schedules every day, and help you sort through some of your feelings throughout the week.

Ex: if you picked up your schedule and are bummed that your absolute favorite chapter cut you, they'll kind of pat you on the back and help you see that it's not the end of the world, and encourage you to keep going. Or if you've been to your Pref parties and are unsure which chapter to rank as your #1, they can be a listening ear throughout that tough decision.
