Is my Father Insane?
I got a bid to a fraternity for this semester but after a few weeks I dropped because I have decided that I wanted to transfer schools. I loved the guys in the house that I chose but I decided that it would be smarter to drop and rush again as a sophomore, so i didnt feel like the outcast of the fraternity when I transfer schools. And the president of the house and the alumni of the house told me I would be able to join again. My father proceeded to freak out on me and say that I would never be able to join the same house or any fraternity again and I would be a forever GDI, and has not talked to me since I dropped in February. Has he gone crazy and will I be able to do it again this fall or am I really a forever GDI.

Did you get initiated?

With respect to the not talking to you for two months, yes, he has gone crazy.
But as far as being able to join another fraternity, that depends on whether you were initiated, what school you went to first, what school you are transferring to, what fraternity you dropped, and what fraternity you may want to join at your new school. |
No I was not initiated I was just a pledge.

He didn't talk to you for two months because you dropped? That's a bit extreme. I'm guessing he is greek as well?

Don't volunteer the information that you were pledging elsewhere, but if it comes up (i.e. if you are transferring to a school that pulls its students from a lot of the same areas as your present school) just say "I started pledging XYZ, but realized I would be transferring and didn't think it would be fair to the guys in XYZ for me to be initiated and then leave school. We are all still on good terms." This will be obvious if you're still Facebook friends with some of them, although I don't know if guys look at that stuff as much as girls. If you run into a fraternity that gives you a black mark on this because XYZ at your new school is dorky or they don't like them or something, or because they feel you are "tainted," then they are stupid and not worth joining. You did the right and respectful thing for all concerned. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. |
