Trouble recuiting members!

SIUE is re-activating an APO chapter. We are doing an ok job of recruiting members, but only female ones though. We only have like two male members. At the beginning we kicked our asses trying get some male members. All they did is complain that it is all girls and service fraternities are for nerds.

I thought having a chapter full of girls would attract guys instead of repelling them.
Any tips?

Color me stupid, but you'd think that a room full of girls would attract men, right? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

As a APO brother of almost 9 years, let me tell you this:

At least 90% of all coed APO chapters are majority female. Even if an all-male chapter decides to go coed, the majority will eventually swing to female.

It is from my observation and experience that in the grand scheme of things, males tend not to feel comfortable in a primarily female environment. That's not to say that you won't be able to recruit males. You will have your work cut out for you, though.

Also, be it by nature or otherwise, the consensus seems to be among college males is that fraternities are for men, sororities are for women, PERIOD. Never the two shall meet.

Good luck to you.

I really cannot give you any tips on how to recruit males, as

When I pledged APO we had a pretty equal # of males & females. In the following years it did tend to slightly skew female, and now it has swung back to a more equal distribution.

I think it isn't just the numbers, but also the personalities of the members. We had some rather pushy females in the chapter and I think it did turn some guys away. Pushy people of either sex are annoying, of course, but I think guys get irritated and feel like they're putting up w/ their mom.

Try recruiting GROUPS of guys instead of just lone men. They'll be more likely to do it if they have a few friends with them.
