Bluemountain cards user fee

the famous bluemountain card site (www.bluemountain.com) is now charging a user fee of $11.95 per year to send cards. This used to be one of my favorite sites but now I'll find another way to send free cards.

So sad. I just went to the website and a pop-up came on and in a nutshell said times were changing and so are they. You have to pay for the service now. :( oh well, it was bound to happen.

I'm happy to report that www.hallmark.com and www.greetnwin.com are still free. It's too bad that other sites are charging though

Try www.care2.com. You have to register but it was free two days ago. They have some cute stuff too.

I've used their service for years now...relying on them to send Holiday cards ahead of time and cards to friends for birthdays...
SO SAD! At least SOME of the cards are still free of charge!

I also wanted to add that ohmygoodness.com has some pretty fun cards!
;)

I forgot to mention beatgreets.com is also a VERY cool site and totally free (for now)!

i wrote this email to bluemountain:
"You've got to be kidding. $12 a year? do you
really think people will pay that when they can send a REAL card for 34 cents? there are so many other free email card websites out there. i guess now i'll have to use them. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT AND RIPOFF. you all should be ashamed of yourselves."

and got this as a reply:
"It is very expensive to run our site and produce all the high quality greeting cards we offer. In the current economic climate, our choice became whether to charge for cards or to shut down the site altogether. This was a very difficult decision for us. Since we value our users so much, we still offer some of our greetings for free - in the Everyday section. "

WHATEVER...is all i have to say. i wonder how much money they'll actually make...probably a whole $24.

Part of the reason for the current recession is the false economy we had in the past few years. The reason so many dot-com startups went bust is because they were not charging. The original model was to get money out of investors to start a site. These investors bought both stock and advertising space. Stock prices soared, companies failed to turn actual profits, and advertisers did not see the return on their investments. Therefore, a new model was necessary in which the money came from the consumers. That was when many sites decided to charge fees. Makes perfect sense to me.

Can I just tell you all how much this pissed me off? Not only did they absolutely not give any heads up on this matter, so I feel completely taken by surprise but I feel they are charging too much for their services. I can understand charging something like 3.95 or even 5.95 for a year, because it still makes people feel like they are getting a deal, but in my opinion this is too much. I understand why they decided to charge - hell, I was laid off from TWO jobs this past year and a half - but I think they should be worried about maintaining their existing clientele and positive reputation. I feel jipped.

IMHO, Ever since they merged with Excite, it's all been a big mess. God forbid any of you have/had excite mail, because they have royally messed that up and basically erased 3 YEARS of messages that I had been saving for a reason. I just discovered this today and am in a state of piss angry shock.
