When your legacy chooses another group...

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I just found it and thought that other GCers would like to read it.

This is great! I need to keep in mind that being Greek is best because none of mine have rushed at a school with Pi Phi. I've put this on my FB page.

Great article! Thanks for sharing :) I know that if I ever have a daughter, I would want to be like this mother.

Thanks so much for sharing this! My daughter is a high school senior now and her current #1 college choice has a strong Greek system, but no Gamma Phi Beta chapter. We just had a talk last night about how she can have a wonderful experience no matter which sorority she joins, and that although I'd love to have her join Gamma Phi, I will be happy for her no matter where she finds her home.

Since hypoallergenic has only applied to one college with an Alpha Gam chapter and has expressed some wariness of Greek Life in general, I'm not holding my breath for an NPC for her. She was very excited to learn about SAI though! Only two of the schools she's applied to have SAI chapters too though.. their Alpha and Beta chapters, interestingly enough. I'm thinking this way... if she doesn't join an NPC in college, then I could probably get her in as alumna initiate later in life if she changes her mind...lol.

Sciencewoman 03-07-2012 08:44 PM

^^^ I'm not laughing...my daughter has already asked me about AI if she goes to one of her other possibles, Georgetown. That's the only one she's applied to with no Greek life at all.

My DD is a HS Jr and is strongly interested in greek life. Every school she considers she looks at how strong greek life is, and if there is sorority housing or not. It is driving me crazy when I see lions, or owls, or keys, or anchors, or kites that I won't know where her home will be for almost 2 years (depending on if the school she chooses is fall or winter recruitment). I think she has gotten the message from me that her choice is her own. My niece on the other hand is really pushing Chi-O . LOL. and this from the girl that I had to push to go first rounds after I signed her up for recruitment. Love it!
(although I do confess to dressing my dd in violets as a small child) ;)

I have bought panda outfits for my AOII legacy granddaughter and owl outfits for my Chi O legacy granddaughter. Annnnddd-I have bought them both cute Christmas angel outfits! Bwahahaha! Let the battle begin!

What a great article!

Sometimes, people lose sight of the fact that just because the chapter of ABC where they pledged in 1982 was a great fit for them, doesn't mean the chapter of ABC at their child's school in 2012 is the best fit for him/her - s/he may find a home with XYZ, or s/he may not want to go greek at all.

What's important is that the legacy is happy.

Let's all be sure to remember this thread when Recruitment starts, and legacies are unfortunately let go.

^^^ Words of wisdom.

BTW, my daughter just returned from a visit to said #1 college choice. Her host was an ADPi and she brought her over to the house for a tour and to meet some of the sisters. I thought that was a wonderful gesture and she really appreciated it!

Mom and I are in different organizations.
I was cut from hers. Too this day, it still hurts. But, I am where I am and I love my org. Besides, I have three letters to put get creative with instead of just two!
Ironically, I am still close with mine.
When she was traveling, I found an article about a woman whose son was working in that area. Mom called up and said that her daughter, me, was in the same GLO. It sparked a conversation. We now get to network within two groups instead of just one.
Several friends of mine in are in her org. We all get along just the same.
My brother rebelled and did not join an IFC but a local, reminiscent of Animal House. Dad's chapter was not there. I think that mom in her traditional ways is still a little bit annoyed at that. Dad could care less. Ironically, he married the most conservative, Talbot's-wearing catholic school girl. Okay, she drinks, but that is about it. Oh and SIL, is another GLO.

Love this.

I have told AlwaysSAI, who is also an AGD, that of course I would love for my "future" daughter to go ADPi, but I would like her to go greek in general. If ADPi isn't the chapter for her, than so be it. I will be a proud momma of whatever chapter she calls home. I will be the ADPi momma who will be supporting whichever chapter she chooses.

great article

Interesting that the original post's link came from Pi Beta Phi. I know of five Pi Phi women with eleven daughters between them, and from those 11 daughters nine joined NPC GLOs but only 1 joined Pi Phi. Each young lady is a positive, contributing member of her own NPC group.
