A question I need an answer for... fast.
Hello. I am wanting to start a local sorority not being affiliated with a college and I was wanting to know if a sorority has to be affiliated with a college. I know fraternities don't have to be affiliated with a college, and was curious if the rule was the same. A local fraternity has a chapter within my University and they aren't affiliated with the university but are known as a chapter of the city we live in, we don't have greek life and we're trying to get it pushed through, and i wanted to do the same type of thing. Start a sorority have it a chapter within the city but for my school. Thanks! :(

No, a sorority does not have to be affiliated with a college. But the college may require all student organizations to register.

I don't know what the deal is with this local fraternity you mention, but they most likely can't do any of the things in the above paragraph either. |
Thank you!

I answered in your other thread about this, but if you wanted to start a sorority based in your hometown and have 50 year olds join it you could. There's no reason that you can't start a woman's organization any way you want. So technically it doesn't have to be tied to the university, but if you want the benefits of advertising on University property (outside of the way they have non-University affiliated business advertise), having meetings on campus without paying a rental fee, and participating in events as student organizations then you will need to think about that. Check out the requirements for student organizations to be recognized and go from there. That's your starting point to deciding if you want to be University affiliated or not.
