Spring failed...should I try again in Fall?

Hello!

So, I recently went through Spring Recruitment at a small, private school with a total of 6 sororities (2 national, 4 local). I only made it to pref round for 1 of the sororities, ended up getting a bid from 2, and declined both because I simply do not feel comfortable with either of those groups.

I made it to the second-to-last round for the sorority I felt most comfortable with, but did not make it to pref for that group. My RA is a part of that sorority and was discussing with my boyfriend during duty rounds (he is also an RA in the same building) about my stance in the group (which I realize is breaking the rules, but I wasn't there and the blame thus falls on her). She told him that she thought I had made it to pref round and that all the girls in that sorority had liked me. She was very surprised when my boyfriend told her I hadn't.

This kind of leads me to believe that I didn't make it in because of the maximum capacity policy at our school. Here, a sorority is only able to have a total of 55 girls, no more. The sorority I was most comfortable with was only able to accept about 3 girls total this spring.

I've been told that it is much easier to rush in the fall and that sororities are generally allowed to accept a maximum about 7 girls each fall (obviously this depends, though). Knowing that the girls liked me and guessing that it was simply because of the maximum capacity policy (though, again, this is just my speculation), I feel like I'd have a better shot at getting accepted in fall. However, I will be a junior next year and studying abroad for a semester.

My question is this: Do you in the Greek community think it would be worth my time to try rushing again during the informal Fall Recruitment period?

Note: I realize in the end it is my decision alone. I'm just trying to see what chance a Junior rushing in Fall with only 3 semesters to contribute would have from the point of view of a current Greek member.

This really depends on your school. At some schools, a junior with three semesters might have a decent chance. At others, not so much.

Also, you really don't know why you weren't extended a bid. There's a possibility that you weren't extended a bid simply because the chapter chose not to extend you one. Just something to think about.

I think I know where you are. I would give it another shot. However, I would keep a more open mind. You rejected two sororities who invited you to join them, and that may be more of a negative than the fact that you're going to be a junior.

As far as your RA & your boyfriend's discussion, I wouldn't believe a word that came out of her mouth. There's no way in a sorority of 55 girls (unless she didn't participate in rush at all because she's an RA) that you don't know EXACTLY who did and didn't get to pref. My guess is that she was trying to sugar coat things so working w/ him isn't awkward.

I do honestly realize that as well and acknowledge that it could just be that the girls didn't think I was a good fit with them. There's just a lot going through my head and I just am unsure if it's worth trying again or not. The reason I declined the two bids is because I don't feel as though I fit in well with them (not that they're not nice girls or anything, but I really don't feel comfortable with them). If the one I thought was a good fit for me disagrees and that's the premise of why I didn't get a bid, is it even worth trying to rush again in fall?

33girl, you make a very good point and you're right to say I should be skeptical about what she said. I have been putting thought into it and just am unsure as to what to believe. She seems honest enough, but you're right in saying she might just be trying to sugar-coat things. My boyfriend probably never should have told me that conversation happened...I'd probably feel much less confused about all of this otherwise. :(

While I think I know this school, I'm not very familiar with how Locals and NPC groups do recruitment together. Is there bid card signing involved? If so, OP did you sign one? Do the Locals there observe the strict 1 year rule for bids if you signed a pref/bid card?
