Clothing for sorority recruitment?
I'm not asking for any specific pieces unless you want to link examples, but for pnm who plans on going through rush at possibly smu or the University of Arkansas, which brands of clothing, shoes and accessories do you or would you recommend? I ask for brands just so I can get a clue of the styles haha. I know recruitment isn't about brands but I just wanted a general idea of what is common around both schools.

Are you registered with your local alumnae Panhellenic? Some of them hold what to wear for rush fashion shows. :)
I will say that even if everyone recommends something, if it doesn't flatter you, skip it. (i.e.: Don't wear a mini skirt and cowboy boots if you have short stumpy legs.) |
Don't wear a mini skirt and cowboy boots regardless.

SMU Panhellenic has a section on their webpage with descriptions and pictures of what to wear for each round.
http://smu.edu/fsl/joinPAN/PAN_attire.asp I couldn't find anything on Arkansas recruitment attire, but their Panhellenic will most likely post and/or mail out that information closer to Recruitment. If you have questions send them an email. I'm confident they would be more than pleased to help you out. |
I'm always slightly suspicious of the Panhellenic "what to wear" advice pictures. In the SMU descriptions, it keeps saying to wear tennis shoes, but no one in any of the pictures is wearing tennis shoes. It just seems to me that many of the official Panhellenic brochures and on-line advice pictures downplay clothes, high heels, etc., but I'm not sure I'd want to be the one wearing tennis shoes when in reality everyone else is wearing something cuter/a bit dressier. From looking at the SMU pictures, I'd go with cute, comfortable, yet chic shoes, but not tennis shoes, during the early rounds, even though it says to wear tennis shoes for the first two rounds.
Definitely follow the advice about not going overboard for pref., though. You don't want to be the most casual on casual days, and you don't want to be the dressiest for pref., either. I'd try to find out from some current students what the typical look is at Arkansas. If they come out with an official recruitment guide book, then take what it says about staying really comfortable with a certain grain of salt. I agree that clothes should be downplayed, but I don't think I'd want to be the one taking that risk. |
Here's the info from Arkansas Panhel: |
Oh, that's great! They only have to bring an outfit for prefs? Fabulous!

Thank you all for replying. I barely have time to come and check anything online nowadays.
I went to the Dallas Panhellenic Alumnae Forum and basically the ladies said to dress a step up from what is told, but to not go over the top or dress uncomfortably and to remember that we are dressing for women, not guys. I think I have an idea of how to dress, but that should be figured out then haha. Not now. I'm still driving myself crazy just trying to figure out what to wear to prom haha, let alone next January. |
What the heck is "snappy dressy?" "Dressy casual" "Resort chic?"
No wonder I don't know what to wear anymore. |

I would guess that "snappy casual" is the opposite of "schlumpy casual." For example, khakis; snappy is flat front with no pockets, ironed (possibly starched) and well fitting, schlumpy is cargo with a zillion pockets and soft enough/loose enough to sleep in.
Maybe it makes it easier as far as not having to pick what to wear, but I can't IMAGINE if I would have had to wear, say, a yellow t-shirt when I was a rushee. I look like crap in it. The intent is good I guess, but feeling off your game by being forced to wear unflattering colors or cuts doesn't really help. Not to even mention the poor actives trying to differentiate women in a sea of identical t-shirts. |
