Colonizaton Recruitment
 

Hey GC. It's been a long time since I've been on here. I'm here because an NPC group is colonizing my university Nd i am taking part in it. given my age and class status, this is definitely my one and only chance to be a part of a GLO. I am excited about this sorority. I have attended the info sessions and set up my personal visit with some of the recruitment team. Like any other PNM, I'M nervous. I look around and see other girls and think they'd have a better chance at being liked than me. I know i would have a lof to offer this new sorority, and it excites me that this new group will have an opportunity to set a standard and begin a legacy on this campus. I would love to be a part of it.

Next week is my interview. There is also a philanthropy and sisterhood event that i plan on attending too. There i will meet other PNMs and be able to reach out again and mingle with the ladies who interview me. Prefer is Thursday and bid day is Friday. I am nervous about it. I try to think of things that will make me stand out or be appealing and unforgettable. But i guess that's not the way to go, since like a regular recruitment, its a Mutual Selection process. I just wish that this org would see in me what I see in them and that i might be able to have a chance to lay the road for future members at my school.

If anyone has any advice for colony recruitment please share. If any of ya'll are the result of colony recruitment please share your stories. Were you as nervous as i AM? Thanks for reading.

If you know any alumnae in the sorority, you should go ahead and ask them to write you a rec. Lots of times, women don't think about recs for a colony recruitment, but they can definitely make you stand out.

Go to the events and be sociable with everyone there, not just the national ladies. I think you got that from what you were saying. Spend some time between now and your interview thinking about what you actually want out of sorority membership, what you want to give, what role you'd like to play as a colony officer (especially as an older colony member I would think a leadership position would be expected and they wouldn't have the time to groom you into it). You might also think about time management. Are you good at it now? You better be! And conflict resolution. If you can come up with an example of how you handled a fight between 2 friends that ended well, that might be another good thing to have in your back pocket.

Unless it is a ZTA colonization. PNMs do not need to worry about obtaining a rec. for a ZTA colonization. Regular recruitment is another story, however.

I feel like I've answered a bunch of threads about my colonization experience. I should probably copy and paste it and have it ready to go.

It's a little (okay, a lot, sorry I was excited to write it) long and has some emotions/side stories in it, but I hope it can at least give you an idea of the steps I went through. It is not a Zeta colony. I do not know any lady who has been in this organization. At one of the info sessions I went to, one of LCs said that it would be this first time this organization would be on our campus. We already have 11 NPC groups, this makes 12. I know they encourage upperclassmen to go through their colony, and they have said of course that they can take up to chapter average, which at my school I would say is probably 100+. I know that knowing that number doesn't make my 'chances' better. I'm trying to keep an open mind and heart. I'm just nervous.

I received a few messages wondering if i was taking part in Alpha Phi's colony at Clemson. I am not, unfortunately. Thanks for all your advice and support. :)

I just sent you a message. If your school is the one I think it is this is a recolonization. The group left campus in 2002.

I was a founding member of my chapter and remember how wonderful and exciting the experience is. Great advice given by the other posters here but I wanted to add that you should try and mingle and get to know a few of the other pnm's as the colonization team will be impressed by your ability to interact with and bond with the pnm's who will potentially be your sisters. Specifically what I mean is be friendly, outgoing and enthusiastic with the other pnm's on that philanthropy day as they will be evaluating your ability to work with others. I would think it'd be a good idea to either remove any information referencing your school, or just be open about which organization and school you're referring to. You've given enough information for most people to figure it out, and I'm not sure if you're hoping to keep some level of ambiguity or not.

I'd give the same advice as I would for any job/internship/other interview:
-Learn about the organization and practice articulating why you want to be part of it, what you hope to gain from membership, and what you can contribute to it.
-Practice (as best you can) finding that happy medium between relaxed, confident and attentive. You want to show that you're interested, without coming across as desperately interested. You want to convey a sense of being at ease in your skin, without seeming aloof. And of course, you should exude confidence without being cocky.

And for any recruitment situation, it's all about perfecting your social and conversational skills:
-Get to know the other PNMs attending the events and chat them up (I would assume the representatives from the NPC group will be looking at how you all get along with one another)
-If you can, do some mock interviews with friends
-Before your interview, make sure that you're in good form: get a good night's sleep, eat a good breakfast, get a workout in, drink some coffee, etc.

I know it's not required (as you are meeting alumnae national officers), but I would think it could be helpful for most groups. A random rec (i.e. you sat down with an alumna from the local APH for twenty minutes and handed her a resume) seems pointless, but I would think that, if you know an alumna personally, you should go ahead and ask her to write the letter.
