ADVICE FORIGN STUDENT

Hello i was stumbling around the web for basic facts about joining a fraternity. My major concerns were simple that im not white and would like to join a IFC chapter which usally are majority causian. Im from Kurdstan which is located near Iraq but have been in the US almost all my life. I have some white friends but mostly hang out with other minoritys. I would love to join a Frat due to the storys of brotherhood and connections you make for future jobs being in the bussiness field. Im currently a freshman attending The Unviresty of Nebraska Lincoln which has a great greek system. Is there any chance i can get into the Greek system Knowing my backround? And would you guys recommend any chapters that are more willing to let people from other cultueres get in? Also what steps should i take for rushing this upcoming spring? I really appricate your guys help.

Your background probably won't be any problem whatsoever. It's going to be more about how you present yourself and your social skills.

Frankly, based upon your numerous grammatical errors and misspellings, I have concerns that you might not be academically up to par. I'd give you the benefit of the doubt if you were an ESL student, but if you don't know how to make the word story into a plural, you're going to have an awfully tough time getting through basic English classes, not to mention any class which requires writing competency. If you have a low GPA, that's going to be a red flag.

Opps. I didn't see this thread. However, there is a similar post in the introductions thread which I replied to so here is my reply from that thread.

As such, contact the UNL Greek Life office and let them know your interest. But I wouldn’t count on that many chapters, if any, looking for members at this time.

Even if that is the case, most of, if not all of, the UNL fraternities have their main rush events during the summer. The bulk of the fall pledge classes are formed from these summer events so contacting the Greek Life office now should get you on the list for this summer’s rush events.

You mentioned that you have lived in the U.S. for most of your life. Was that in or near Nebraska? Most UNL chapters are made up of men from Nebraska and the surrounding states. This is mainly due to summer rush events being held in state and in a few nearby out of state cities. But a kind of “formal” rush is held at the start of the fall semester as well. So if you are unable to attend the summer rush events, then you may still attend events once the fall semester starts.

In the meantime, do you know any members of any of the chapters? If so, talk to them not only about their chapter, but your general interest in joining a fraternity. If you feel comfortable doing so, ask your friends the same questions you are asking here. Of if you know any sorority women, ask them as well. They would have a better idea as to what the chapters demographics might be.

Best of luck.

It’s pretty easy for me to have a conversation with strangers at a party or something. Im very active, i left weights, play soccer all the time with people at the rec, and take judo classes.
And
Loll I no my spelling pretty much sucks I did go threw ESL but finished before middle school. I try to stay away from English classes and take everything else. My gap for last semester was a 2.8 but i'm defiantly planning on bringing it up to 3.2 by the end of these year.

Thanks for your advice! I do now a couple guys who are currently fraternities at unl. They seem pretty chill and I will defiantly ask them questions next time I see them. And yes I moved to Nebraska when I was four so pretty my whole life has been spent here. I was planning on talking to some sorority chicks, about which fraternity I can represent the best, but didn’t because I thought I would be coming of as desperate. I will contact the unl greek life office to see whats going on and learn more about the Greek System. Would it be a problem for me to rush in the summer being that i will be a sophmore by then?

However My main concern really had to do with my race being a factor. If you guys have any more advice for me on anything that I should consider doing to help my chance I would really appreciate it.

Your race shouldn't be a factor. Your spelling is horrible. As long as you aren't required to submit a writing sample for recruitment, you should be fine.

It shouldn't matter.

Most chapters hold open rush events over the summer. These are mainly held on campus during the various freshmen summer orientations - simply to make it easy on the incoming freshmen (and often their parents) to attend.

However, prior to (and even during) the on campus orientations, most chapters will also hold off campus events outside of Lincoln. And some events on campus at their house. These rush events may be open or may be by invite. Most often there is some combination of the two.

Note: Some chapters begin Summer Rush events at the end of the spring semester (i.e. in May), so to receive full consideration, it is recommended that you sign up by May 1st.
