Little Brothers/Sisters

I couldn't find any threads on this topic, so I apologise if this is a repeat.

On t.witter, tumblr, facebook, etc., I have seen Alpha Gams, as well as members of other NPC sororities talking about having "Little Brothers" (wearing their letters, hanging out with them, whatnot) from different NIC fraternities. What exactly is a little brother for a sorority woman? Is it specific to certain campi/regions? What is the point of this? As far as I understand it, no NPC sorority has any NIC "partner" in this sense.

There are several threads talking about this. From what I gather, you randomly pick a guy and refer to him as your "little brother." I guess they would say it "strenghthens fraternity relations" or some nonsense, but all I've seen that it does is create drama.

This is NOT to be confused with the organized little brother (for sororities)/little sister (for fraternities) programs that existed into the mid 80s, where the brothers or sisters went through rush and a pledging process and were active supporters of the fraternity or sorority, its programs, and its philanthropy.

Thanks!! I knew that it couldn't be the second possibility, but I didn't know if there was a "new" system. Still not sure I understand if there's actually a point, though. I feel like being friends with someone and spending time with them should be enough. Maybe I'm old-fashioned.
