skating

hey guys! im new at this, so can someone explain to me what skating is? thanx!

AlphaXiGirl 04-13-2001 12:07 AM

That was new terminolgy for me too but given the context that I've seen it used in I think I've got a grasp of it now.

Skating is a term that those who support hazing use to define the actions of a new member that is not hazed before being initiated... They are scating through their new member period.

Apparently you were either hazed in order to "earn" your letters or you "skated by".

Can someone confirm this for me?

Can someone search this board for me? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

Seriously, it's a lesson that needs to be learned. Quickly.

yeah you pretty much have the gist of it, but it also goes a little farther then hazing, so people who go through the new member process, don't do anything, or have it really easy, is a better phrase, so therefore people will say they "skated"
Hope that helped

There's also a website that has a good explaination of the concept:

I think it also needs to be said that you do not need to be hazed or otherwise abused to 'earn' your letters. You can show your commitment to your GLO in other, valuable ways. Work, dedication and upholding your fraternity's values are much more important (and IMO, impressive) that taking wood or verbal abuse.

ok, first off...hey!!!!! i'm new to this whole message board thing, but bare with me. Firstly, let me say i don't mean to offend anyone, so if i happen to step on toes, i apologize - it is not intentional. My query is this: i am interested in becoming a member in a bglo. i have read books, gone thru many websites, and really narrowed my choices down to two. My problem with my first choice sorority is this - the particular chapter here at my university. Reading the threads about skating was really interesting to me, because that is the case with sorority "X" at my school. The last line that crossed skated. Now, the previous line didn't, but a complaint was made to nationals by someone who didn't make that line, which inevitably put restrictions unto the line that followed. Now, the first line is all graduating, leaving the 'skaters' to intake. Now, i have a great deal of interest in this sorority, but i think the pledging process is an important stage that one should go through, and i would like to have the respect of fellow greeks if i was to cross. But i just don't see how i could go thru a pledge process under girls who didn't go thru anything. am i making sense? please forgive me if i use the word "pledge" instead of "haze", but hopefully you get my point. I look forward to all responses...Ahead of time, i'd say thanx to anyone who took the time out to reply...

"Pledging" and "hazing" are two VERY different things, and just for future reference, it is extremely offensive to a great majority of the Greek community to use the two interchangeably. I'm not yelling, just letting you know before you do it in 3-D life.

As far as doing a search - go to the top of the page and click on the word search. You can then type keywords on the subjects you are interested in into the search engine. That will show you the threads on this board that have discussed your topics of interest previously.

What are you talking about?

I DO NOT have a comment on this topic.

I suggested that you perform a search in this forum, because this SAME subject has been discussed NUMEROUS TIMES! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

ZetaAce's previous response said it all, but I guess you didn't think that it applied to you, but it does... Here it is...

Those are the EXACT questions you need to ask yourself....

You also said: "i would like to have the respect of fellow greeks if I was to cross"

Why is that important? How will that help you be a better member of your sorority of choice?
