AEPi Rush shirts

Not sure if anyone uses this, but post some of your ideas.

Thinking about using that for a rush shirt.

We were discussing something like Home Depot, but the rush chair outright said no . Maybe go for something in the style of ESPN, as the founder was a brother

Not Jewish, so let me know if I overstep my bounds here. But what about "Don't Jew want to rush?"

I'll let you know when our rush chair brings out his design. I think it draws looks, but that is it. What was used to bring me in was a man in a tux in the design of the NBA logo, with a simple "Rush AEPi, where great things happen" printed on.

No, it wasn't. It was cringe-inducing and stereotype ("the Jewish fraternity") perpetuating.

BTW, you made a request:

If I'm not mistaken, DeltaBetaBaby is Jewish, so I'd take her facepalm as an answer to your request.

Not offensive, I just thought it was kinda dumb. I also don't speak for all Jewish folk...that said, I don't know that you can say AEPi is "stereotyped" as the Jewish fraternity. It was and is a Jewish fraternity. Some chapters choose to emphasize that, other's don't, during recruitment, and some have many non-Jewish members, but I don't know that you can call it a stereotype.

jazing 12-18-2011 10:56 PM

I wouldn't call it a stereotype because that is what we are. It is stated in our mission statement plain and clear. Sure non-Jews can join, some chapters encourage it while others passively recruit them. But personally, I feel a closer bond to my Jewish AEPi brothers.

I would certainly emphasis Jewish in rush, but not to the extent of that statement. For any other brothers who happen to be on GC, I think highlighting well known Alumni is the best way to go. Except Zuckerburg, he is a bit too well known, and the Social Network didn't really highlight AEPi so well. Alumni like Jerry Lewis, Chet Simmons(Rush AEPi in ESPN font), Gary Bettman (NHL logo with Rush AEPi inside), etc.

That's my 2 cents on this issue. Our rush chair is still working on it.

Thanks, both of you. My take (as someone who is not Jewish) is that it was dumb and could be offensive (hence my "cringe-worthy") -- perhaps to some of the men the chapter would like to attract. I guess one would have to know the campus climate well to know how it would be taken.

As for the stereotype, I know that AEPi celebrates it Jewish heritage and ethos, and that certainly shouldn't be denied. Perhaps it's my age, but it just sounded a little like "the Jewish house" to me, with the discriminatory/segregated connotations that phrase carries.

jazing, I agree that highlighting famous brothers can be a great way to go. If you can use a catchphrase (or, like you said, logos/fonts) associated with a famous alum, that can work great. One of my favorite rush tee-shirts for us showed Mr. Rogers and said "Won't You Be My Brother?"

AlphaFrog 12-19-2011 10:40 AM

^^^ Awe, Mr. Rodgers.

I wonder how a greenbean casserole with ASA spelled in fried onions would look on a tee? Caption could say: An American Classic. Ok, maybe not.

Ha! BTW, the PHX alum Panhell asked this as a trivia question on FB Thanksgiving day. I answered it immediately thanks to my GC knowledge. I think they were stunned.

FSU is also using our previous logo. Seems like a common one chapters are using.

Here

These were the Rush shirts for the AEPi on my campus.

The shirts are amazing. They got a lot of notice and they were even able to sell them on campus to raise money. A lot of sorority girls bought them.
