Drinking during pledging?

Hi everyone.

I go to a large SEC school and I am looking to pledge at one of the "top tier" houses here.

I realize the process of pledging is often overdramatized based on things like Animal House, and I don't really mind cleaning or running errands. However, one thing I am worried about is alcohol during pledging. Its not that I don't drink, I just don't drink a lot, I don't like getting drunk/hangovers. What isn't clear is what happens in the darker parts of pledging, and of course I've heard the stories about being locked in an attic with an hour and a handle. Is this sort of thing still likely to occur? Because this is really something I wouldn't want to go through.

Talk to the IFC if you have questions. For me, it was a dry pledge, and my organization strives to have that (dry as in not forcing alcohol, anyone over 21 was not told they cannot drink)

Are you willing to say the SEC school you are at?

War Eagle! Anyway...for my fraternity pledges were not allowed to drink, but I ended up getting drunk more my pledge semester than I have in the 4 years since. My advice though. Don't worry about it. If you like the guys then put up with the crap for a semester and enjoy being a brother.

A fraternity i know quite well i would say lol had drinking as a part of their hazing, but understood some kids did not drink/couldn't handle their shit so the rest of the guys drank their share...but it was never all that much. A handle and 1 hour is asking for a lawsuit and even worse killing someone.

LOL there will probably be drinking more likely than not. It was that way when I was at OSU. I'd let them know up-front how you feel about it, and see where that leads. I wouldn't say anything before being picked to join, though. Every organization is different, so I'm only speaking from my own experiences with my frat.

Just tell them up front during rush. Then you won't have to worry about going through it.

I knew a couple of men who pledged at excellent SEC chapters (i.e., the ones that sororites would break their necks to have mixers, pair with for Homecoming, etc.) who were not drinkers and were not forced to drink. I think they may have made up for it in other ways, but drinking wasn't pushed when they made it known that it wasn't for them. (Besides...who wants to waste perfectly good alcohol on someone who won't appreciate it.)

Yeah, tell them you don't want to get hazed and see how it turns out. Whatever you say during rush, the person you are talking to will tell you something to make you want to pledge. They'll say you won't get hazed, because whatever you go through they will not consider hazing. A friend of mine dropped from pledging a fraternity for this very reason. He felt he was hazed, and he was told he wasn't going to be. It all depends on what the brother feels is hazing.

If he feels by alcohol, you mean binge drinking, you probably won't go through that. But you might still take some shots or something. We would never know.

Tell them you have a liver disease and can't drink.

AlphaFrog 12-15-2011 12:48 PM

Sounds to me like the OP is fishing for hazing stories.

ZZITY? HBITY, maybe?

I can honestly say that my chapter does not require any of our pledges to drink anything that they do not want to.

I would hope everyone can make this statement. I will go along agreeing to the same.

Yeah, well, unfortunately I know that that's not true even on my own campus for some chapters. I wish that it could be said for hazing in general, but that's not always the case.
