Tacky, tastless Christmas
ITT we discuss the tackier side of the holiday ostensibly celebrating the birth of Jesus but too often veering off into rampant consumerism and schmaltz.
To start you off, tacky movies. Anything to add to this list? "One of the best ways to cope with the stresses of the Christmas season, like gift shopping and family get-togethers, is to make a bowl of popcorn and settle in to watch a holiday movie. But instead of spreading Christmas cheer, some holiday movies make you yearn for Dec. 26. In "The Worst Christmas Movies Ever," Slate V names some of the biggest duds of the holiday-movie genre, from classics to horror flicks." http://www.slate.com/articles/video/...vies_ever.html And how could George Lucas okay Episodes 1 - 3, but not allow this to be aired? http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...09610753051544 |
But wait - there's more!
"One of the Yuletide perks of being an insomniac is that you get to experience a tasteless side of the holidays that has, I would argue, a weird, redeeming value (unlike most of the other tasteless sides: the gift-grabbing, the manipulative marketing, and the perpetually ringing shouts of “more, more, more”). Of course, when you find yourself up at three in the morning, watching grade-Z films where Santa gets up to no good in outer space and elves are used for dubious sexual experiments, the entire concept of Christmas—at least until the sun comes up again—can become disarmingly distorted. But these movies are never less than memorable. So let’s raise a glass of nog (maybe add a little extra booze) to five of the worst—and yet somehow strangely enjoyable—Christmas films you’ll ever see." http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/...rofile_oneline |
For the Chi Omega SongFest my chapter dressed "Tacky Christmas" style... ugly sweaters, ugly ties that played Christmas music, etc. ...it was...terrible. But, what's worse is that I see people wearing that sorta stuff and think that it looks cool.
