Christmas gift question for Playstation owners
Hey guys,
I'm thinking about getting my boyfriend a DVD player for Christmas. His roommate told me last night that Playstation plays DVDs in addition to regular video games. Do any of y'all with Playstations use it to play DVDs? If so, is it a good quality picture or do you think I'd be better off buying a regular DVD player? I know NOTHING about Playstation, so any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks! :) |
My boyfriend has the playstation 2 that can play dvds. As long as you have the right inputs on the back of the tv, you're fine. His vcr was hooked up weird and it kept trying to autotrak the movie. the dvd looked fine to me once we got it resolved.

only the playstation 2 will play DVDs

Before we got our Playstation 2, we had a bottom line sort of one, and the picture was kinda fuzzy, and it would skip the DVD's. We've never had a problem with the PS2, so I highly recomend it.

I recommend the XBOX because it is leaps and bounds better than the playstation 2. The xbox can play dvds but you have to buy the $30 remote control to play them but it is well worth it because it plays dvds so much better than playstation 2. The xbox also has a hard drive and ethernet connection in it so it can hook up to high speed internet access. The xbox can even be hooked up to your dorm rooms internet access to play video games online in the future. Also the xbox costs $330 ( I am including the cost of the dvd remote control the system itself costs $300 the same as the playstation 2) There is also some sweet games on the system as well like Halo and Project Gotham Racing. Overall I highly recommend the xbox over the playstation 2 because you get more bang for your buck with the dvd capablities, hard drive, and ethernet connection. Last thing with the hard drive you can rip cds on to the hard drive and play them on the xbox. Go to www.xbox.com to learn more about.

I have a Playstation II and it works great for me. The DVD picture is excellent, and the games are great. I've been happy with it, and the price is probably going to go down a little with XBox and Game Cube coming out.

Oh my damn, I didn't know PS2 played DVDs!
One more reason to buy one. No wonder why it is so expensive. |
It all depends on what you're looking for. If he wants a DVD player, get a DVD player. Don't get the PS2 because its a DVD player. Yes, it plays them pretty well. But its not primarily a DVD player. The remote to work it is REALLY sucky. If you don't use that you can use a controller.
For about $200 you can get a really solid JVC or Sony DVD player that has capability for mp3 VCD, CD-R/RW playback. The PS2 is a *great* system, but since its primary purpose isn't as a DVD player, unless he wants the gaming system, get a regular DVD player. |
XBOX is so much better than PS2. The remote control on the xbox is pretty good. It also plays dvds a lot better than the PS2. XBOX is a much better buy than PS2 because it comes with a hard drive, ethernet connection, and for $30 more you get the dvd capabilities.

We've got a PS2 (got it for Christmas last year from my brother in law!) and it's great! It plays DVD's great.....well, I mean not as good as a high-end DVD player, but it doesn't skip or anything!
As for the X-box....don't get me started! It's made by Microsoft...and yes, it does have a hard drive in it, but big deal! The graphics aren't much better than PS2 (from what I've seen anyway) and a bunch of the games are already available for PS2. My husband is the biggest Microsoft-hater out there (to the point he wants me to change my email account from Hotmail....I'm not doing that...I've had the account way too long...I like it!) But he was telling me something the other day that the X-box won't do good (and not just cause it's made by Microsoft!) because of it's inability to upgrade or something like that. I'm not sure on the specifics....I'll have to ask him again..... But for now, I say go with the PS2! You're boyfriend will be very happy......a gaming system AND a DVD player! You'll be the greatest girlfriend ever!!!!:D:D |
Hey guys! Well, I told my husband about this thread and he sent me an email giving reasons why NOT to get X-box. So for anyone thinking about buying either X-box or PS2, here's my husband's reviews:
1) DVD Movies The playstation2 can play DVD's out of the box. There are no problems with it. You may purchase an additional remote control but this is not necesary, you can use the regular controller to interact with the menu. The xbox will not play DVD's unless you buy an additional remote/reciever package which right now is hard to get. The xbox will not play DVD's better than playstation. You can purchase an adapter for the xbox to get hdtv quality output but this only works for games, it will not work for DVD's. 2) Graphics Visually, the graphics look a bit better on the xbox than on the playstation, however the hardware ability curve on the playstation2 is still fairly young. In a year or so, the newest games will look twice as good as today. If anyone has ever followed console games and compared the difference between first generation games and 3rd and 4th generation games, they know what I mean. Compare the first games for playstation1 with the ones that are out there now. The programers have learned over the years to sqeeze the most processing power out of the system, and the power of the playstation2 will be better utilized over time. Unfortunately for xbox, there is nowhere else to go. It is already utilized at 100%. This is because the xbox is not new. It is new to consumers, but if you open up the xbox, you will find that it has a pentium 3, and a very popular geforce3 video card used in many computers. The graphics for this chipset are already optimized, as this has been programmed on for some time. What microsoft is selling you is a computer that you probably already have, and packaging it in a nice console box. 3) Games Hands down, the playstation2 wins for games. Being a veteran of the video game scene, I can tell you that there is absolutely nothing more important than games. The playstation2 has many more games available for it, and games like GrandTheftAuto3, GranTourismo, FinalFantasy X, MetalGearSolid2. It has many more "ONLY on playstation2 " games than the xbox will ever have "ONLY on xbox" games. Why ? Because since the xbox is commodity hardware, and it is very easy to port xbox to computer and vice versa. This means that most of the xbox games will also be available on your computer, so why bother buying the xbox ? 4) Compatibility There is a large selection of playstation1 games that all work with PS2, in addition to all the PS2 games out there. The xbox only has a few dozen games. The xbox has ethernet out for internet games, but you cannot play them yet (unless you install a hack that is not authorized by microsoft). The PS2 will have the same ability as they have firewire support which they can run ethernet modem through. 5) Future The future is bright for sony. The playstation2 will continue to get cheaper and cheaper as sony continues to make advancements in its fabrication process. This will allow many more people buy it, and as the market grows, more games will be out for it. For the xbox, the opposite is true. Inside, the commodity parts will continue to get more expensive as the 3rd party vendors will be more hesitant to continue to produce older parts. Try asking Intel to make a batch of 486 chips. Sony does not have this problem because they are one of the few companies in Japan that make their own chips. 6) Conclusion There is a lot of hype surrounding the xbox right now because Microsoft is the greatest marketing company in the world. But this is not the PC world where they can continue to leverage their monopoly and cheat customers, and the business world already knows all of Microsoft's anticompetitive tactics and I doubt they will let them play the same tricks in the game market as they did in the home computer market. Sony is a large company, and now that they recieve 40% of their net profit from playstation alone, they simply cannot afford to lose this battle. *********************************************** Well, that's it folks! I hope this makes your decision easier!:) I know it's a bit long, but it was worth it!:D |
I NEED HELP TOO!
