Big sis/lil bro or Big bro/lil sis?
I don't understand the concept of that the whole Big sis/lil bro or Big bro/lil sis.
So apparently I'm being pushed to get a Big sis. What's the purpose of getting a big that's the opposite gender? I understand having a big within my own fraternity. So why do I need to get a Big sis? I heard it's looked down upon from nationals but people still do it anyways. What are the benefits? I met a nice girl at a social who wants to be my Big sis but what does that really mean? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm rather confused at the moment. |
Unless you're a member of a local group, any sort of Big Sis/Lil Bro, Big Bro/Lil Sis program is prohibited by (I believe) all NIC and NPC organizations. If you're required to get one, your chapter (and if the girls are in an NPC group, their chapter) are in risk management territory.

There is one NIC organization that has a Big Bro/Lil Sis program. I haven't heard of any others doing it, though.

You are supposed to find your own big sis? I have never heard of that. I think the more typical thing is that your big bro asks a close friend of his to be your big sis, to help you make sorority contacts.
(all of this is off-the-record, of course, this stuff is not really allowed) |
Technically, none of this is allowed by our nationals. However, pretty much everyone does it, at least on my campus. A girl usually asks a guy to be her little bro when they build up a close friendship after a while of hanging out, it's not a spontaneous thing. A guy can ask a girl to be his big sister too. It doesn't really matter. There's also big brothers and little sisters too. It works the same way. Usually they get matching letters that say "ABC Lil sis" or "XYZ Lil Bro" underneath and make each other paddles.

All I know is that they are all unofficial in terms of with the NHC. The fraternity can choose to recognize them, as I have with my big sis. But otherwise, the sorority does not.

^^ What is NHC?

I meant PHC

Ohh, OK. Thanks

You met her at a social and she asked to be your big sis then and there?
I disapprove of this whole concept big time, but if a girl is moving that quickly, I would run fast, run far. It's supposed to be someone who you truly do have a sibling relationship with. |
