Does anybody know if University of Arizona does spring rush?
I've been sharing my sorority experience with one of my best friends that goes there and she's been really interested in joining a sorority at U of A. She's a sophomore and I just needed some feedback on whether or not there is a spring rush in 2012 that she can do.
-I tried looking on their websites but nothing came up... -And if you could give any feedback or tips for recruitment at U of A, that'd be appreciated! |
I'm sure AzTheta will correct me if I'm wrong (calling AzTheta!!!) but I believe that
all the NPC chapters at the UofA are at or close to total following formal recruitment in the fall. There is no spring recruitment organized, if any chapters do any, its probably friends of women already in the chapter. For a definitive answer, I'd suggest that your friend contact the UofA greek life office. |
^^^what AZ-AlphaXi said. All chapters are at or (way) above total, with one exception.
Have your friend contact the Office of Greek Life (located in the Student Union, 4th floor, I think it's "CSIL" or something of the sort but a search on the UofA website will easily locate it). At this time I am unaware that any of the 11 chapters will be doing any sort of COB or informal recruitment. That may change, so contact Greek Life. Feedback/tips: do a search on GC for University of Arizona recruitment. That will result in several threads that your friend can read. Good luck to your friend. |
Truthfully, pretty much all the chapters will take at least a few new members, but only a couple houses actually set up recruitment events in the spring where anyone can attend. I would tell your friend to contact the chapters she is interested in directly if she isn't getting any information from the greek life office. Also, I believe in January all the fraternities and sororities do a Spring Recruitment event where all the organizations set up tables and you can inquire about spring recruitment.

Again - all the chapters with few exceptions are at or way above total, and therefore, cannot add additional members unless they fall below total. OP, please tell your friend: your very best information will come from the Office of Greek Life at the UofA. |

I know my chapter is waaaaay above total and so are most of the ones I am familiar with. It's possible a couple chapters who have struggled with being at total before may have a little room this spring but those would be very very few unless they raise total again. |
What I meant is that a lot of the chapters have girls drop out, so by the time spring rolls around, there are more than a few chapters under total. I personally know some girls who got bids in spring to "competitive" chapters who are known for always being above total in the fall. They don't advertise it, but I know that a lot of them do give out bids.
But I agree, the only way to truly get the right information is to contact the Greek Life office. But it also couldn't hurt to contact the chapters directly. The worst that can happen is that they ignore you. |
Things may be different this year after having such a massive quota.

Per the report put out by the Greek life office
http://s3.amazonaws.com/os_extranet_...805_gpas11.pdf only 5 NPC chapters had new members in spring of 2011, and of those 5 2 had 1 new member and 1 had 3. |
So in other words, the answer to "Does U of A do spring rush?" is no.
The answer to "Can you join a sorority at U of A in the spring?" is technically, yes. |
On a complementary subject, one of the sororities shows 221 actives, far more than any other chapter, but took 3 new members in the spring. How can this be?
|
That particular chapter, I am told, does not initiate until after Fall Semester is completed and all new members have achieved the required minimum GPA for initiation. They did not take three new members (Total in Spring 2011 was 180). I expect you can connect the dots. All other chapters initiated in Fall 2010.
FWIW, the membership totals indicate the number of members for whom grades were reported. Those members who were studying abroad are not counted in total for the semester. Specifically, we were at 202 (or thereabouts, if memory serves) in Spring 2011, but had 20 members either abroad or on a semester leave from our chapter. Total now is 200. New member classes Fall 2011 ranged from the low 80s to the low 90s. |

*bump*
From a recent Panhellenic Advisor meeting that I attended: There are two chapters not at total who are eligible to do COR or Spring Recruitment. The other nine chapters are at (or well above total). There will be no formal Spring Recruitment at the University of Arizona. There is an "All Greek Info Fair" on Wednesday January 25th 2012 in the Student Union Ballroom. It's scheduled for 4:00 p.m. but the time is subject to change. Each chapter is encouraged to participate and staff a table where information can be shared with interested PNMs. This is a good public relations tool for those chapters who cannot recruit (due to being at or above total). |
Is there any thought of moving AXO's recolonization up or moving somebody ahead of them? It seems with those chapter sizes they could accommodate a stacked expansion.
And speaking of that, did Sigma Kappa do their colony at ASU? I don't recall hearing anything about it. |
