Looking for Ideas to Help My Soror
 

Hi all!
I'm looking for advice.
I have a Soror that came before me (sometime in the 70s/ I'm a new member).
She is a friend to my family. One night, they were victims of a home invasion and her husband was shot. Now he is paralyzed from the waist down and her insurance will not pay for everything. My church is having a concert to help (her husband is very active in the city's church community) and I've brought it up in chapter meetings, but I want to help more. What is a way that I can get all the GLO's involved... or the entire community involved? My Soror said she hasn't slept in weeks. I just want to help her.

I say start with your church and chapter. They will be able to help or give you some advice.

Other than that, doing a yard sale or some other type of fundraiser is a basic way that people help. On a personal level, you can help your soror with things like grocery shopping. Every little bit counts. Good luck.

Here are some ideas:

1. FIRST, tell them to petition the hospital, doctors, etc. to knock down the bills. Many hospitals offer indigent care for cases like this. You have to ask, though. I know people whose bills were in excess of $200,000 and all but about $10k was written off. The rest was paid in monthly installments.

2. There is a great site called GiveForward.com. It's a fundraising site. They collect 7% of the total raised as a fee, but it does all the work for you. You just have to advertise it.

3. Get in touch with foundations for people who are paralyzed, people with certain types of injuries, victim support groups, etc., to find other resources. Perhaps they could offer babysitting or someone to run errands - things that they otherwise would have to pay for.

4. If he is unable to work his usual job, approach the state for Vocational Rehabilitation services. They often help pay for/arrange education or training to people with disabilities/medical conditions that would otherwise affect their ability to work.

God bless YOU for wanting to help! You've been given some really good suggestions. Also, if he is on any medications, someone could contact the pharmaceutical companies -- they will sometimes donate their prescription medications to people suffering hardships.

My community has organized a lot of fundraisers in recent years for local families that have fallen on hard times. Events like 5K Races and Golf Tournaments have been very successful, raising a significant amount of money very quickly. My oldest son had a teammate on his high school football team who was stricken with cancer and the football boosters raised $30,000 in one morning with a pancake breakfast. I also know a group who got local restaurants to donate food for a luncheon to benefit a local family that needed help meeting some medical expenses.
