Recruitment Result!!

Just wanted to post the results for my son, who is a freshman at Georgia Southern University. Formal Fraternity Recruitment there actually starts this coming week, but he was honored to receive and accept an early bid...following in the footsteps of his father, two first cousins and a great uncle to become the fifth man in our family to join the awesome brotherhood of.......................

SIGMA PHI EPSILON!!! Our family loves those Sig Eps! And yes, this is the same chapter that Carnation's son is a member/officer of!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy on many levels, one being that I will probably get to meet Carnation in person sometime down the road! Proud to be a Sig Ep Mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great to hear he received a bid, hope he does great things in the greek community!

Did he get the early bid because of "legacy" or does that not matter?

greekdee 09-15-2011 12:52 PM

I don't think that factored in to his early bid at all. Other guys who are not legacies also got and accepted early bids. I hear there was a time when legacy status really increased somebody's chances of receiving a bid, but those days appear to be long gone. I know and know of plenty of girls and guys both who have been cut by their legacies. I have a friend whose son was recently cut by the fraternity his dad and grandfather are members of. Unfortunately, it was the only fraternity the guy has ever had any real interest in and he is now without one because he won't consider others.

Anyway, my husband is thrilled that our son is now his brother, but he encouraged him not to get comfortable with the legacy standing. He advised him to look at other houses as well...1.) to make sure he had found the best fit for him and 2.) in case that bid from the legacy didn't come. BUT --it did, our son loves his new brothers and we're all thankful that it worked out. :)

Greekdee is right! Most of the early bids went to non-legacies.

Excellent news! I went on the SigEp Tragos Quest to Queece with the President of your son's chapter. He is an all-around outstanding guy, and I'm sure that he is running a phenomenal chapter right now.

carnation 09-15-2011 03:19 PM

Yes! He is super--he's my son's big.

greekdee 09-16-2011 12:35 AM

Satire X -- Congratulations on being selected to participate in Tragos Quest To Greece! I read about that in the chapter's online newsletter and my husband told me some about it -- it is truly an honor to be among the few chosen to go. And yes, my son speaks highly of the president and all of the members. This chapter at Georgia Southern seems to be a stellar group of young men with genuine brotherhood. :)
