New Chapter at my school
Hi
let me start by saying thank you to anyone who replies and that I don't have much knowledge on Greek life (but i am learning now) Delta Zeta is starting a new chapter at my school and they are doing a colony recruitment and I am interested in joining. I am a transfer student though and i know that lots of the incoming freshman have higher GPA's and more volunteer work than i do. any advice on what I should say or not say in my interview? is there a certain type of person that Delta Zeta looks for? is there a proper way of explaining why I don't have as much volunteer work. anything information/advice to help with this process would be great. :) |
Why don't you have as much volunteer work? Simply explaining truthfully would be the best. If it's because you're just plain lazy and went home every day to watch TV, well, there's nothing you can say to help you with that.

Hello Gandhi and welcome to GreekChat!
I know this sorority recruitment stuff can be overwhelming and confusing for someone who isn't familiar with it. I have some very general advice for you, but please understand that I am not speaking as a representative of Delta Zeta but as someone who has been through recruitment on both sides. As far as your interview, it's very important that you BE YOURSELF. As far as volunteer work, be honest if they ask you about it. Emphasize your strong points. Be positive and upbeat. Don't try to hide your enthusiasm! If you find that you are really interested in joining, TELL THEM! These women want to meet and learn about YOU so this is your opportunity to sell yourself and let them know what special spark you can bring to the sorority. Best of luck to you and I hope you let us know how things turn out! - Tracy |
I can't speak specifically for Delta Zeta, but colony recruitment is usually looking for representatives from all class levels- and they should be well aware that GPAs, hobbies, etc will be different for upperclassmen than for freshmen. Your GPA or involvement would likely be considered against other upperclassmen who are going through colony recruitment, rather than compared directly to the freshmen. Volunteer work can also take different forms, so think about campus organizations you have been involved in and whether what you've been doing with them have benefited the community in some way.
While I'm sure you are thinking quite a bit about what Delta Zeta could bring to you, also be sure what you can bring to Delta Zeta. Take a look at some of the colony threads here- they are building an entire chapter at once, so they need people who can step in immediately as leaders (both with that personality type and probably have leadership experience already on campus), committee members (maybe haven't been leaders but have been involved in making things happen), special advocates (passionate about certain areas of the group such as sisterhood, scholarship, service, etc), and great sisters overall who are willing and excited to go through the rewarding but hard work required of a colony. It's a question of why it's a good match- what they will do for you and you will do for them. Just food for thought- there are some great threads here for you to glean some advice from. |
