Rush week at MIZZOU

I have been reading some of the threads about rush and decided to start my own. I wish I had started it earlier in the week because I have loved the ones with the daily updates...but I guess I will have to give a summary of the week so far.

My daughter went to MIZZOU not knowing anything about rush or sorority life. Nobody in our close family participated in the greek system. She went with an open mind and no recs whatsoever. She knew no girls there in sororities and had no preconceived stereotypes of the chapters. She literally learned the names of the sororities as she visited them on the first two days.

Day 1 I got a text halfway through the day saying how much fun she was having meeting all the different girls and visiting the houses. I received another text later that afternoon saying she was "in love!" with one of the houses. We'll call that one "margarita". She came home (her dorm)with three clear favorites and couldn't wait to go to the rest of the houses the next day.

Day 2 I again received a text halfway through the day saying she "loved loved loved!" the house she just visited. We'll call that one "summer shandy." She came home with two clear favorites to add to her three from day one. Her overall favorite was summer shandy. Her second favorite was margarita.

Day 3 She was excited to be invited back to 10 of 11 of her preferences and all five of her favorites were included. She had a blast on the long long long day 3 and came home with the same five favorites but two clear front runners where she felt most comfortable (still margarita and summer shandy) She did switch her number one and two preferences. Margarita took over the number one pref spot.

Day 4 She was invited back to 6 out of her 7 preferences and was terribly disappointed to be cut from her 3rd choice from day one and two. Her roomate was cut from a house that they both fell in love with (summer shandy). But both were invited back to margarita!

I received a text mid day saying she was more in love than ever with the margarita. She sent a text later saying her visit at summer shandy was awkward and uncomfortable. She didn't like the way the visit was set up because the girls were visited with in groups of three rather than individually. She didn't feel the house took the time to get to know them well enough to make decisions to keep or cut them. She did some hard thinking and chose her top three from the day, hoping they would all invite her back today (Friday) and especially the house she loved so much but was disappointed in on Day 4 (summer shandy).

Day 5 (today) she was invited to her first and third preference but summer shandy cut her. She called today after her visits and said she had the best time ever in margarita. She liked her other two houses also, but only preffed two for bid day. She said her second choice was a house she initially liked...but didn't love, but after visiting them all week, felt comfortable there and met some great girls. Even though her clear first choice was margarita, she knew this was a sorority she would be happy in.

She has her fingers crossed and is so nervous and excited for tomorrow when they find out where (if) they get bids. She was disappointed about summer shandy cutting her because even though she had one awkward day there, she thought it was a house she would fit in perfectly with. But she also said she would have struggled a lot with choosing her first preference between summer shandy and margarita, so in that respect it made things easier.

I always love a KKG ending! Congrats!!!

Quick question - my experience and knowledge of Mizzou is that recs are very important. Without any recs (per your OP) I am surprised (and in a good way!) that she had such good returns.

That would be no recs that they knew of. I can assure you that I've done recs on women who never knew it......someone may have done the same for her.

Agree---lots of late night phone calls from the basements of the chapter houses across the country are made to get those letters of recommendation and support!!!

She honestly just didn't know the importance of getting recs. When we went to a general Greek meeting during Summer Welcome, the young lady leading it said they weren't necessary. I'm just glad it didn't seem to hurt her. She couldn't be happier with the outcome. If someone secured recs for her, she would be grateful if that helped her get her bid to Kappa Kappa Gamma.
