Fraternity dilema
I am in a bit of a dilema and was wondering if someone could help me out. I rushed a fraternity my freshman year at a pretty small, private college. I was initiated and whatever. However, I recently realized that I could not go back to the small college I was at (financial reasons). I am transfering to a larger university. I was wondering if it is reasonable to rush another Fraternity at the new school I am going to. I am really worried if there is a chapter from my old college at my new one, I will not like it, basically because they might not be the type of people I would call my "brother." My question is that would I be able to go through the rush process again at this new school, or would i pretty much be tied into the fraternity I'm already in, but a completey different chapter. Help me out and if you have questions let me know.

No, you can't rush again. (Short answer version)
Besides, if you're having financial issues as you say, maybe a fraternity shouldn't be a priority... |
No, you cannot just go through and rush another fraternity. Many groups won't take someone who's been in another fraternity, even if it's at another school, even if they've gone through the proper channels with their national office and disaffiliated.
Have you tried making contact with any of the brothers at your new school through Facebook or their website and explained your situation? It almost sounds like you're dismissing them without even seeing what the guys are like. You never know, you might actually like them as much as if not more than the brothers where you pledged. If your old school and new school are that much different, it might also turn out that the Greek system as a whole will be that much different and not something you want to be involved in - regardless of which fraternity it is. |
Yeah, thats what I was thinking too. And the financial situation isnt really personal finances as it is the other private college discontinued my scholarship and the larger university offered more money. But thank you for your help, I was just wondering. Like I said, I haven't met any of the brothers yet, I was just a llittle worried and was wondering if there was any alternative just in case. Thanks again

It should be simple for you to find out whether your fraternity has a chapter at your new school. If it does, find out (from your fraternity, not from GreekChat) what is involved in transferring chapters. In many fraternities, it means the chapter at the new school voting on whether to allow you to affiliate. Make contact with the new chapter so that you can get to know them some and decide (on your part and on theirs) whether you want to try to affiliate. With many fraternities, if you don't affiliate with the chapter at the new school, you'll go to alumnus status, but appropriate people in your fraternity can tell you the rules for your fraternity. And if there's not a chapter at your new school, situations like this make me miss the "stray Greeks" groups that many schools used to have. |
