Dream Sorority House

What would your dream sorority house include? What do you think are some essentials things for a sorority house?

Just a few things I love: plantation style homes and split staircases.

Essential: sleeping rooms and bathrooms
Dream House: elevators, a theatre with movie screen and stage for those skit days during recruitment, crafts room, T shirt storage room, pool in the backyard, enough power to each room to run 3 hairdryers, 4 curling irons, a milk steamer and cappuchino machine, a popcorn machine, 2 TVs, 5 computers and a parrafin wax warmer.
And a sleeping porch instead of beds in the rooms.

Just curious, why sleeping porches?

Honestly, there's very little I would change about my sorority house. It's not too big, it's welcoming, and it feels like home. I love our porch swings, and our amazingly comfortable couch, and I really can't imagine another house being so "us."

That being said, however, I would love for there to be more girls living in the house at any given time. Also, more space for crafting stuff, and a bigger kitchen would definitely be a plus :)

ETA: My school doesn't have a sorority row, the houses are spread out throughout the campus area. Part of me would love to have that kind of environment :)

Sleeping porches so one can actually sleep....

FSUZeta 07-30-2011 04:57 PM

my house had sleeping porches(no longer, tho), which were dark and quiet 24/7. you could take a nap anytime you wanted or stay up all night in your room with the stereo blaring and not disturb your roommates, because they were fast asleep in their beds on the sleeping porches.

Exactly!

LOL @ pleasure bots

I'd lose the sleeping porch and instead have single and double rooms. A quiet relaxation room, like some spas offer, would be nice for a quick nap.

Common areas: living room (formal enough to look nice but not so formal that you're afraid to sit on the furniture), dining room, kitchen, quiet study room, outdoor area with swimming pool and hot tub - said outdoor area magically stays warm and usable even in the midst of cold New England winters. ;) Sisters would be free to use the kitchen to cook whatever they wanted unless the house chef was preparing something for which s/he required the whole kitchen (e.g. dinner for the chapter, food for recruitment).

I would want a music room with a great Steinway piano, lots of Broadway scores, and decent soundproofing to protect studying bystanders.

TV room with a huge HDTV, surround sound, and all the fixings. And a popcorn machine. Because popcorn is delicious.

Yes, and yes. TV room should also be soundproofed or in a remote part of the house, so those who need to study can do so. A DVR must be present as well. (Back when I was in college, Lois & Clark and Babylon 5 were on at the same time, and a floormate of mine, an L&C fan, staked out the floor lounge, sometimes an hour in advance, so he'd have dibs on TV channel choice. It forced me to find somewhere else to watch B5. But that was one of the things that led to my getting together with my husband, so I'm not complaining too loudly ;) )

Not just Broadway, I'd throw some classical and jazz into the mix. (I'm not a big fan of jazz, but many, including my husband, are.) While we're at it, let's add another soundproofed music room (piano optional) so that people who sing or play other instruments have somewhere convenient to practice.

All of the above, with a spa :) complete with a cosmetologist who stops in once a week to do nails and touch up roots

... and how many college-aged women have to worry about roots? (Unless the curtains don't match the carpet *cough*cough*)

A mani/pedi for all sisters just before recruitment might be a good idea tho' ... and a touch-up and polish change just before pref.
