Dancing_Greek's Fabulous Recruitment Adventure! Fall Recruitment 2011

After hours upon hours of reading through other girl's stories about recruitment, I have decided that I am going to do my best to keep you up to speed on my own formal recruitment endeavors.

Recruitment begins in about 2 1/2 weeks. I move up to my new place of residence on August 13th and the process starts on the 14th.

I am an incoming freshman to this whole experience. Both older sisters have either graduated from this same university or they are in the process, one is a senior this year. Neither of my sisters went the sorority route, just never really had the interest. Now me on the other hand, well that is a different story. When my oldest sister was still in college, I remember visiting her. We would always drive past sorority row and I couldn't help but have this connection to them. I always told my mom, I am going to be in a sorority! Well now that time has come and the experience of a lifetime will be here in a few short weeks. I can't believe how time flies.

I am the baby of the family, the last one to go off to college. My mom continues telling friends how even though she has done this twice before, she has no idea what to expect this last time around. LOL

The university has a total of 16 sororities that we will be getting to know over the course of that week. I see that many people have chosen to use code names for the houses just to keep things vague. I am a Grey's Anatomy fanatic so I am going to go with the lovely character list as my code names:
Meredith
Derek (McDreamy)
Christina
Alex
Izzie
George
Callie
Bailey
Mark (McSteamy)
Arizona
Lexie
Owen
Jackson
April
Teddy
Addison

Well anyways, this post is long enough! Can't wait until the process actually gets underway! You've got one overly nervous and excited girl over here! :D

Update of Formal Recruitment Preparations!

Well I can't believe it! 9 days until I move and 10 days until my first official day of formal recruitment! It is all very exciting, I have found it virtually impossible to go a single day without thinking about it. I think I might be a tiny bit obsessed! :D

I finished up my outfit shopping yesterday, just have to find some more accessories and shoes! Two of my favorite things, so that shouldn't be too hard! I am really excited about all my outfits esspecially my business casual outfit, it's sassy but classy!

Now my pref dress, well that has been a struggle. The funny thing is though, we aren't having a problem with finding one that we like or looks great. We are having too much luck and finding that every single dress I try on looks awesome, not to toot my own horn. We actually bought 3 the first night, one being a black dress. I figure, if I find my new home, a black dress is a stable of the sorority wardrobe. So that will be a keeper, but the other two are both blue. One has a bit of a pattern and the other is plain blue and strapless. My mom and I were a bit hesitant about both of them so we decided that we would keep looking! But, man did they look good on me. ;) Yesterday we finally found a dress that looks killer and we think that it will be perfectly apporpriate for pref night.

Whelp, counting down the days!!

I have to admit, I'm pretty jealous you've found multiple pref dresses! I'm having a hard time just finding ONE! I'm excited to read your story though, good luck!!

I am sure you will find one that is perfect! To tell the truth, I have never had so much luck finding a dress. It usually takes forever, I guess luck was on my side the past few days. Hopefully the luck sticks around until formal recruitment is over! By the way, GOOD LUCK TO YOU TOO! This is going to be an amazing experience for both of no matter the outcome! :)

yay!! I can't wait for it to start for you! I have a good friend who is about to start recruitment at Ole Miss, so I'm loving all of these stories! Best of luck to you!

Thank you for the Good Luck vibes everyone! I can't wait until I get to start reading other recruitment stories, so much fun. Ohh and it's highly addictive, I have been reading past posts and I keep telling myself, one more page then shut it down. Yeah, that hasn't been happening. One page turns into 10! Haha

Can't wait to hear your story!

Dancing_Greek 08-26-2011 09:20 PM

Wow, Wow, Wow...It has officially been a week since the end of formal recruitment. It feels like I have been living in my dorm for over a month! With my first week of classes done with, and catching up on most of my sleep, I have decided it's finally time to reveal my recruitment story. Bear with me, its going to be long and I will do my best to post promptly and not make you all wait!!

Saturday night, August 12th, we started off our week right with a huge pizza party that included everyone participating in recruitment. It was a lot of fun to see all the girls and think that a handful of these girls will be your new sisters by the end of the week. We went to the party with our Rho Gamma and recruitment group. This is the point when I would like to mention how fabulously wonderful my Rho Gamma was. She ALWAYS had a smile on her face and I felt so comfortable talking to her about my unsure ideas about the houses. Hands down, the best Rho Gamma ever!! My recruitment group also turned out to be an amazing group of girls. We grew so attached to each other and we were all a little torn when we realized that we wouldn't get to be together the whole week. I absolutely loved these girls. We will all be so close throughout our whole college career.

Anyways....

Pizza party was awesome, the faculty introduced themselves and the Rho Gamma's did a skit for us. They sang us a song from each of the 16 sororities, so much fun to watch! After dinner we went on our real estate tours. This consisted of walking around Greekland and going to all the houses, without entering. We gathered in front of the houses and our Rho Gamma told us a few facts about the house physically. We wrote our notes and continued on to the next house. This was mostly so we could see the house and make a mental note of it, and hear some interesting facts about it. Once we saw all 16, we headed back to our dorms so that we could get an amazing night of sleep before the longest day of recruitment. Next up, 16 party day!

So excited to hear your story!

Alright all, I am back! Seems like I was MIA for awhile there, but not to worry, I have come back with a recruitment story!! :)

Sixteen Party Day!
Whew! Sixteen houses in one day! Let’s go!

April - First house up! There were some mixed emotions going into the first house of the day and my first house ever! I was so excited but super nervous and really had no idea what to expect. Thankfully, after all the lurking I had done on GC over the summer I knew to at least expect loud chanting and clapping and sure enough 2 minutes after getting lined up the chanting began. As we walked up the front steps it all began to become very surreal. I absolutely LOVED April the second I started talking to the first girl. I really connected with the girl, as we were both the first girls in our respective families to go Greek. She was also a dancer just like me so we didn’t run out of things to talk about! Overall, I felt super comfortable talking to the April girls and they all seemed like the same kind of personality as me and held the same values. This was the perfect way to start off my recruitment experience and I was ready for more!

Owen- I was so excited to go into Owen! I had done some research earlier this summer on all the houses and found that I loved this one. We got ready to go into the house and I had butterflies in my stomach. I talked to 3 girls while I was in this house and felt so comfortable talking to all of them. One girl even mentioned that she loved how confident I was about my future and I wasn’t afraid to speak up, this was a major self-esteem boost! We talked about dance team and dance in general and before we knew it, it was time to head out. As I was walking out the door, one of the girls caught up with me and told me to remind her of my name again because she was wanted to remember it. I thought that was good sign! I had an awesome impression overall of this house and I couldn’t wait to go back!

Meredith- Meredith was next up on the schedule and I was a little apprehensive going into this one. The reason being, earlier that year, my mom and I had taken a tour of this house and thought it seemed a little…. funeral parlorish. Fake flowers everywhere and outdated decorating. I knew that I didn’t want to base my decisions on the house its self but it would play a little factor in my decision. But, to my surprise I walked through the door and was completely taken back! It looked completely different and more updated which was a relief because I absolutely loved all the girls I talked to. I talked to a girl with the same major as me and that was a lot of fun. Another girl and I talked about how she had such a family relationship with her show choir team in high school and that’s when I told her about being the same way with my dance studio and that was one of my main reasons for wanting to go Greek. I left the house feeling like I had made some great connections with the girls and was feeling very confident about this house.

Arizona- After going to 3 houses and having amazing experiences at all of them I was ready for the next! I went into Arizona with an open mind and ready to mingle. I talked to 3 girls at this house and out of the 3 girls I really only felt comfortable talking to 1 of them. The other 2 girls were super nice but they were very awkward to talk to and I just couldn’t carry a conversation with them. The girl that I enjoyed talking to was the VP and we held a pretty good conversation. When it was time to go I was ready. Arizona was somewhat of an awkward house and I couldn’t really picture myself there.

Callie- Before going into this house, I had a preconceived opinion about it. I knew I shouldn’t but I just couldn’t help it. I was hoping that all the girls in the house would turn my opinion around because I really wanted to have an open mind during recruitment. I walked through the doors of Callie and was greeted by all these gorgeous girls. The theme of their house for the day was very clever! I had some pretty good conversations with the girls I talked to, but I felt like I was pulling teeth to get them to ask questions and be engaged. I left the Callie feeling so-so about them and sort of wanted to give them a second try but I wasn’t sure.

Bailey- I was surprised at how much I actually liked Bailey. I figured that I wasn’t the typical Bailey girl, but I found that I had a lot in common with the girls and really enjoyed talking to them. They all loved the flower that I had in my hair and their outfits were supering cute too! We talked a lot about the connections that this particular Bailey had with all her sisters and I loved that she cared about the girls so much. I left the house feeling surprised in a good way and happy.

Mark- I went into this house having a friend that was in it and she absolutely loved it and was always talking about it. I couldn’t wait to go in! All the girls were super sweet and they had one these adorable pink sparkly Toms! I talked to one girl, who was in the university modern dance company, and really got me thinking about joining it, myself! Everything in the house was so bright and fresh and I was so comfortable talking to all of the girls that I did. I left this house feeling really confident about it!

Derek- The first note I had written about Derek was: ABOSUTELY LOVE THIS HOUSE. That basically sums up how I felt about Derek. When I was talking to all of the girls, there were no awkward pauses and the conversation wasn’t forced at all. It felt like I had known these girls forever and we were all best friends. They weren’t your plain Jane conversations, they were super interesting. I couldn’t stop smiling when I walked out of this house; I wanted to go back in so bad!

Teddy- I really liked Teddy!! All the girls that I talked to had so much in common with me, like we had parallel lives! I hadn’t talked to anyone in other houses that were as serious about dance as this girl and I. I loved it! She told me about how close all the girls were in the house and that some of the seniors had a huge “moment” last night and I thought that it was really special and super touching. I really felt the connections that the girls had with each other. I was hoping that Teddy would show up on my schedule tomorrow because I wanted to get to know these girls more!

16-marathon day to continue soon….

16 Party Day Continued...

Here it is, the rest of my 16 party day! Hope you enjoy it and I will be back tomorrow with results and more stories! :)

Alex- I didn’t really know what to expect from this house, but it turns out that I really liked it! All the girls seemed so down to earth and really sweet. I had pretty good conversations with the girls and I felt comfortable with them. We had a funny conversation about creeping on our new roommates via Facebook and how if we didn’t have FB we would be lost. The only thing I really didn’t like was that unlike all the other house they had two PNMs for every one active. I felt like I couldn’t really get to know the girls because I felt like I needed to let the other girl talk and I didn’t want to dominate the conversation. I wanted it to be fair for the both of us. I left the house feeling like I needed to give it a second chance.

George- I remember having amazing conversations with all 3 girls that I talked to. They were all so easy to talk to and had great senses of humor. One member of George actually came up to me and said that she knew my older sister and then a light bulb went off in my head and I remembered this girl too! She ended up being the next girl that I talked to and we chatted on and on! All the girls in the house were beautiful and their personalities were perfect. They weren’t too over the top but you could tell that they really love each other! I really, really liked this house!

Lexie- Well, I will just come right out and say that Lexie was defiantly not one of my favorite houses. The conversations I had at this house were very forced and boring. I felt like at the other houses, the small talk was more interesting and expanded into normal conversations and stories, but at this house it was all about the plain small talk. I felt somewhat comfortable and I smiled and was polite. One thing that really bothered me was whenever I answered a question; the girl would ALWAYS respond with, “that’s cool.” She would then wait for me to ask the next question. I know that these girls are just as nervous I am, but it just felt like a let down after having such a good day at all the other houses. The girls were nice but I just couldn’t see myself there.

Izzie- Overall I really like Izzie! The girls were super sweet and they were all dressed so cute! The conversations were so-so only because one of the girls was a little awkward to talk to. She seemed like she was really nervous, but we got through the conversation. I feel like if I got to know the girls a little bit more, I could really start to see myself at this house. I love the connections that the girls had with each other and seemed so comfortable together. Like I said before, I really liked this house!

Jack- Hmm, what to say about Jack. To tell the truth, out of all 16 of the houses, Jack is the only house that I don’t recall very well. It is obvious that it didn’t stick out for a reason. By going back through my notes I am having some “aha” moments and it’s coming back to me a little bit. There just was something about this house that didn’t jump out to me and say that it was the right place for me. The conversation was just average and nothing special. The house was gorgeous and the girls were all very kind but I just don’t think that I could have seen myself there.

Christina- Whew, last house of the night. We all did a little cheer when we got to this house! I wanted to make sure that I was still pleasant and peppy when I walked through those doors even though I was hungry, exhausted and had blisters growing on my feet. The girls on the other side are just as tired as I am! I put on a happy face and popped right through the door. I talked to 3 girls while I was at Christina and had some of the best conversations of the day. By this point, I am a professional at the whole small talk thing and I feel so comfortable talking to these girls. We talked about my major and what I was going to do after college, which is go to nursing school. The last girl I talked to was a riot. I was so happy that she was the last girl I talked to on the end of day one. She asked me the most random questions like, “if you could live on any planet, which one would you choose?” and “what is your favorite flavor of gum?” The funny thing is, I didn’t find the questions weird at all. They were super refreshing and I had so much fun. When it was time to go, I was sort of bummed. I wanted to stay and talk to this girl! Absolutely loved this house and it was the perfect way to end my day on a good note!

Next came the ranking. We were to rank our bottom 6 houses from favorite of the least favorite to our lowest choice. This is how I choose to rank mine:

Bailey
Izzie
Callie
Arizona
Lexie
Jack

My favorites of the day in no particular order:
Meredith
Derek
Christina
Alex
George
Mark
Owen
April
Teddy

Coming up next…….
