Community Sorority
 

I have tried numerous times to find a local or national sorority whose main purpose includes the preservation and research of local history.

Does anyone know of a local/national/community Sorority that has this as a main purpose? I have been working at starting my own, but I don't want to if there is already one in existence. There are some community sororities that allow membership in different states...whereas a local would not be an option since they are, well, local!

Can you explain? Like a "National Archives" sorority, except at the local level?

So like a local historical society but with Greek letters?

Every time someone mentions starting a local sorority on this site, people automatically ask "what makes your group different from any other?"

I was thinking that our main philanthropy would be local history. There are many beautiful Victorian homes in our area and we could fund raise to preserve these places. Many sororities have philanthropies that give money to the sick, local animal shelters, etc.

I think one of the things that makes a group a group of women a sorority is a common bond and love for something. So if that something is local history, music, reading, or anything else under the sun--a group of women can identify themselves as sisters.

Because that is what your aspirants will ask.

We asked you to clarify so that we could provide some accurate input.

Also, you can share a common bond without being a fraternity/sorority.

ETA: No one in this thread asked "what makes your group different," so I'm not sure what the OP is bitching about.

Honestly, that is a very very narrow focus for a group to bond or establish themselves over (local historic preservation). Most sororities start with a group feeling there is a need for fellowship. Could you not meet the need for this historic preservation by establishing a service project through a club or sorority you are already a member of? It could even become an annual event.

I guess I'm still asking that after what you wrote. Other than being women only, what makes the group you're describing any different from the many historic preservation groups out there?

Obviously, I agree that a shared passion (say, for music) can be an integral part of a strong brotherhood or sisterhood, but Xidelt is right -- the best starting place for a fraternity or sorority is the desire for brotherhood or sisterhood, not to support a specific philanthropy.*


* Reminded once again how the emphasis fraternity and sorority philanthropies is a relatively recent thing.

Recent meaning early 1900s?

Quick question for clarification- you're an SAI, and wrote another post about also joining a social sorority, and now you're looking to found another one relating to local history?

Is there a reason why this new organization you are inquiring about HAS to be a sorority?
