Teenager Sound Test
 

I got this from The Oatmeal (actually, after clicking something within the link KSUViolet posted). Supposedly, this sound is generally only heard by people under 25. Malls will play it to keep teens from lingering. What say you, GC? Can you hear it (and if so, are you under 25)? Even with my comp on the lowest volume setting, I can still hear it--and it's annoying enough to make me move. It's the same sound that TVs and other appliances make--I can hear those, too.

I can hear it, I'm not under 25, and I have hearing damage, so who knows how accurate it is?

It really upset my cats, they both woke up and looked around then glared at my laptop.

How could you not hear that? It actually kind of hurt my ears and I am over 25 and have not so great hearing due to concert and headphone stupidity from when I was younger.

I couldn't hear it at the normal volume that I can hear my other computer noises. I had to turn it all the way up. I initially answered "What noise?" because of that.

A lot of kids have made noises in this spectrum their ringtone for their phones at school because most of their teachers can't hear it.

This one is a little better test. I can hear 11 and 12 very clearly at low volume. I can't hear any of the others.

I can hear all of them, even with the volume turned down. 18Khz made me cringe.

Another good sign of this is whether you can hear the whine of electronics, like an older TV or monitor. My parents TV has this problem, but they can't hear it, leading to them accidentally turning off the cable, but leaving the TV on and it's a black screen with a hideous whine.

That's not even that high pitched. Remember the mosquito ringtones that kids were using so their parents couldn't tell they were getting phone calls or texts? That was much higher pitched...I could still hear it, though.

BTW, I just saw Dee's test. I can hear up to 14 pretty well. 15 is uncomfortable but I can't make it out. After that, nothing.

I listened when I woke up this morning and was able to hear up to 17.

ETA: I'm 26.

I'm 21 and could hear up through 14 but nothing above that.

I can hear it, christiangirl. I can also hear all of the ones on the mosquito tone test. I'm 20.

I can hear it and I haven't been a teenager since the 1980s. If malls really are doing this, they are wasting their money.

On the other test, I could hear all of them except 17 (including the 18).

Try it a few times. It didn't work on my iPad and it worked intermittently on my computer at work.

I hear all of them... the 18K, probably beyond that. I'm 32. I don't know much about how hearing works physiologically, and this may be a dumb question, but medical people might know: Does the fact that I'm a musician have any bearing on my hearing? I'm a classically trained violinist, not a bad player, had a scholarship for most of my undergrad to play in the school's orchestra.
