What? Telling a journalist to do some research? It's unheard of!

LondonJourno 04-28-2011 08:58 AM

Thanks for this, but I'm actually looking to do a feature on the American sororities/fraternities, and 'hazing'. We do have some hazing in the UK but to a far lesser extent.

Alpha Phi Alpha is an American fraternity.

You're a terrible journalist.

Plus, "inter" workings?

Hi,

I am a journalist in London, England, and am really keen to cover a story on the inter workings of a sorority/fraternity - as in the UK, all of this is a really foreign concept to us!

I wondered if someone (ideally numerous people from a range of sororities/fraternities) would be interested to speak to me about what sisterhood/brotherhood is really like, maybe on Skype or via e-mail?

Thanks so much!

Anna

It's been done to death before, and not necessarily well.

What is your angle?

Do you think that research done on internet message boards will lead to credible sources?

How do you plan to confirm your sources and fact-check?

How long have you been a "journalist"?

AnotherKD 04-28-2011 09:16 AM

You want to know what sisterhood/brotherhood is really like, but then go on to say that you just want to know about hazing? Try again.

Benzgirl 04-28-2011 09:17 AM

In a nut shell, nobody on this forum will discuss their "inter workings"; they are kept confidential to members only for a reason.

As for hazing, most schools have policies that ban hazing and those caught violating this rule are subject to disciplinary action.

You haven't even stated what media outlet you are representing and you're doing a topic that is done all the time. Why don't you contact media relations from national headquarters of fraternities and sororities? They could connect you with members abroad and provide quotes for your article/broadcast story.

Any legitimate editor would question your use of sources from a discussion board on the internet.

I'd love to read a NEWS story where the research was collected via Skype and email.
