Is it possible to join a sorority as an international student?

Hi,

I'm from Melbourne, Australia and I'm planning to do an exchange during the spring semester at Barnard college, Columbia. I was just wondering if it is possible to join one of the sororities during my stay as I really want to immerse myself into American college life.

Thanks,
Sarah :D

If you're only here for a semester it's very unlikely. That said, you will have tons of ways to enjoy and immerse yourself into college life here that are as much fun and probably quite a bit cheaper.

Have fun!

Thanks! Are you at Barnard yourself?

Nope, but there are always excellent activities available on every campus :)

It sounds to me like you're skating pretty close to membership selection, although I admittedly know nothing about how Alpha Xi Delta conducts their membership selection process. In other words, from what you wrote, I gather that perhaps AXiD lets people "join"?

to the OP: recruitment is a process by which NPC Greek Letter Organizations select new members. It isn't the same as "joining a club". It is a process that is rule-governed by a Manual which is published by the National Panhellenic Conference. Each GLO has its own policies and procedures regarding membership selection, which are considered Ritual and are not discussed except between the members of each individual GLO.

I think you might be taking AXiDuhhhh's use of "join" a bit too literally.. but I could be wrong..

Remember that all sorts of people are lurking and reading, not just those of us "in the know", so I try to get clarification whenever possible.

Can you not hear the screaming? "what do you mean, you said I could join..."
:p

Very true.

I'm sure mixer will be in here any second telling everyone that they can "join" any sorority they want.. they just have to like what the sorority's mission and values are, and they're in!

We Had An International Student From Mexico That Wanted To Join Last Semester, However She Could Not Because She Would Not Be Actively Involved The Semester After. It Would Just Depend On The Sorority And What Their Constitution States For Rules Of Membership.
