Delta Tau Delta closes its Chapter at Lehigh

Hi Kevin, hi Lane_Sig. For your lists? :

Delta Tau Delta has “suspended” the charter of its chapter at Lehigh, that is, closed the chapter. The report::

http://www.wfmz.com/lehighvalleynews...64/detail.html

Excerpts:

. . . The group's charter has been suspended by the national leadership, and all fraternity operations have ended.

Delta Tau Delta has announced they have suspended the Lehigh University chapter of the fraternity effective immediately. They say this move is because of "risk management violations" . . .

"This was a painful but necessary decision," said Jim Russell, executive vice president of Delta Tau Delta through a press release. "The chapter had lost sight of the Fraternity's values and fundamental principles. The men were not in alignment with the Fraternity's risk management policies, especially those dealing with alcohol and hazing." . . .

Edited to add link for student paper article (its content is not a whole lot different from the article mentioned above, but hey):

Lehigh has had a lot of problems this year in the Greek community.

This is getting ridiculous... I'm wondering if this is all began occurring recently, or if it's been going on for a while and the administration is just now dealing with it. Any thoughts

I did some searching and came up with these recently closed/disciplined chapters at Lehigh:
Chi Phi
Delta Gamma
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Gamma Delta
Gamma Phi Beta

Correct me if I'm wrong

Nope, that is a pretty accurate list.

Yeah, we were pretty shocked by the Lehigh AOII chapter since they won our JWH cup at Convention in 2009 (top award given to collegiate chapter for the biennium). Just proves that you don't always know what collegians are doing behind the advisors backs.

It's always sad to see a Delt chapter go, especially an old chapter with a great history I'm sure. Let's hope the Beta Lambda chapter will return someday with a new direction.

I really hope that the Greek Life situation improves, since it sure seems like there are a lot of strong chapters with rich histories there.

It sounds like what happened at Towson a couple years ago - stuff that had supposedly been going on for years all of a sudden got cracked down on. Sorry, but if you let students get away with stuff forever, don't be surprised if they think it's OK fine.

WOW this means only Theta and PiPhi remain right? How short of a time period are we talking about here? Mere years?

Nuking in pieces

I don't think I've ever seen a greek system get nuked in pieces before. Is the administration becoming anti-greek, or is it cracking down on things which should be cracked down on and all of the chapters are just screwing up?

Being nearby about 10 years ago for years, and being friends with people in these chapters and spending time at their campus, I can give an outside opinion that the stuff was going on awhile ago. Granted, I don't know what it's been like recently, but it would seem to me that the school is just starting to crack down where they really should have in the past- maybe it wouldn't have been so drastic now if they would have dealt with it back then. Just my opinion, though.

All of this happened within the past year. I think the Chi Psi one might have been a year an a half ago, but pretty much all the sororities were hit with suspensions at once. There's an older thread about it with a link to a news article if you search "lehigh sororities"

Most of these groups are still on campus there. I think you misread what Victoriana posted....

So not all of these groups are CLOSED. I think the majority have just been disciplined. AOII is still on campus as far as I know.

What does "discipline" usually entail? No social calendar?

It could be mean no socials, no spring recruitment, etc...I am sure it varies with each group. I would also think each group could be disciplined by not only the University but their National Organization.
