First Female VP candidate Geraldine Ferraro dies at 75

Quote:

BOSTON – The first woman to run for U.S. vice president on a major party ticket has died. Geraldine Ferraro was 75.

A family friend acting as a spokeswoman for the family say Ferraro, who was diagnosed with blood cancer in 1998, died Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Ferraro was an obscure New York City congresswoman when she was catapulted to national prominence at the 1984 Democratic convention. Walter Mondale chose her to run with him against incumbents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

*mocks your thread title*

But she did a lot for women purely by running. One step that takes us closer to the finish line.

I know the title is wrong. I just copied what was on Yahoo, though.

ETA: Yahoo updated the title.

R.I.P.

These people are dying so young.

It was her vice-presidential campaign that first got me excited about politics. I was 9, and I remember thinking it would be so amazing to have a woman one step away from presidency.

I think of how far we've come, and how far we have left to go.

Amazing times we live in. And though she lived a long and great life, she will be missed.

Ferraro was actually NOT the first female VP candidate, but the first VP candidate for the 2 main parties. Marietta Stow was on the national ballot as VP in 1884, with Belva Lockwood her running mate for President. They were on the ballot for the National Equal Rights Party.
But, yes, to break into the 2 major parties on such a national scale is a big deal.

I liked her even though we were on opposite sides of the political spectrum. I always trusted that she meant what she said and said what she meant. She will be missed. RIP
