question about looks

hey peeps,
okay here is my question I got braces put on today... I am twenty. It is along story why I did not get them on younger. But needless to say I am still pretty self consous (sp??) about it. So do you all look directly at stuff like that or not

SigmaChiCard 11-14-2001 02:24 PM

I have to admit that I personally would have to get the clear kind if I were ever to get braces, but no, I've had a friend in college with braces, and there is no big difficulty there. You won't get stares or anything because of it, don't fret.

It all depends on the person. Some people look at eyes some look at smiles. Don't be too worried braces don't look that bad. Some girls look cute with them.

zntke said what I was going to say. Plus-just add a tad more eye makeup than normal.

Oh, honey, I feel your pain! ;) I was told this summer (on my 20th birthday, no less!) that I had to either get braces or have this awfully painful-sounding surgery on my jaw. Needless to say, neither option sounded good so I did what I do best: cry and cry some more. Oh, the woe! I couldn't handle having my jaw surgically broken (ouch!) and I didn't want to wear braces like some sort of pre-teen. In the end, though, I did get the braces, and a nervous breakdown came with it. I knew I'd have to go back to rush camp, school, and then meet hundreds of PNM's with braces on - I was heartbroken.

News flash - I got this high-tech new clear kind, spent a long weekend in the mountains with my sisters at Rush Camp, and realized that they cared more about giving me Advil every 4 hours (I got them on days before Rush Camp) then laughing at me. People think they're adorable and, since I only have to wear them for four months (six more weeks!) it isn't a big deal. I learned, however, that PNM's would not laugh at me and refer to my GLO as that "braces sorority" (my biggest fear!). I also learned that maybe I'm a little more superficial than I thought. I still go out, have fun, and enjoy just as many laughs and smiles as I used to. At first I was self-conscious but now, since no one pays any attention to it but me, I just let it go. I'm a lot more than a pretty set of teeth! So my advice is this:

Just accept it graciously - let your personality (as it always should be) become the part of yourself you take the most pride in. Bottom line, the calmer you are, the calmer everyone else will be - it's so not a big deal! Even if you have the regular kind, it's just a bit of metal on your teeth; I promise you won't become a social pariah! So good luck, take plenty of Tylenol, and know that when they come off your smile will be ten times as beautiful as it is now!!

WOW

KDGirlie, you have a 1954 Chevy Grill mouth!!!!!!

Do you know how much a 1954 Chevy Belair two door hard top or rag top is worth!:D

The only thing is be careful about hooking up,pun intended, with another Brace wearer! If you get conected, you may need a wrench expert to pry ya apart!!!!

One of my best freinds step daughter who is a hottie had colored braces and could have them changed to the seasons I think!

Hell YOU ARE YOU!!! You could have a big hairy wart on your nose and be cross eyed with Dumbo flying ears!

Sucks now but down the ruff and rocky road you can put a pearly grin on them folks!!!!!!!:D

KDgirlie-PLUS remember, a womans true beauty is only hinted at in her early 20's. By the time your braces come off, you will only be on the brink of your "prime".

KDgirlie, I had to have mine put back on when I was 20 (my wisdom teeth had pushed my teeth out of position). The best thing you can do is smile real big--a lot!!--and ignore the braces! People mostly notice them when you just kind of grimace for a smile or cover your mouth a lot.

Thanks guys,
you definately put a smile on my face. Everyone has been so nice to me... even my kids ( that I babysit) thought it was cool. I found out that I broke my jaw and never even knew. It is definately going to take some getting used to but at least one day they will be off and it will so be worth it. I was joking with the assistant at the office that I thought I got carded before now I really am. But who knows maybe I'll get in to the movies cheaper.
big smiles

Kdgirlie....you'll be fine. When you get to be my age you'll be LOOKING for things to do to make yourself look young. And looking young is honestly the worst that braces are going to do to you.

That's wild about the broken jaw and not knowing it. I can't imagine how that would happen, but I found out I broke my nose without knowing it, so there ya go.

DGPhoney 11-14-2001 11:43 PM

KDgirlie, I say work it out and remeber you are beautiful with or without the braces. My friend although quite loud and flamboyent had braces and she had no problems what so ever, she even took it to the point to change the color of her bands ever so often to fit her mood, lol. So work with them and just look at them as a added beauty feature ;)
Don't let the braces make you, you make the braces :D (if that little phrase made any sense)

I got braces as an adult as well. I wore them for 2 years and 4 months. It didn't bother me much that I had them on...what bothered me more was not being able to eat all of the foods that I liked and having to brush my teeth and floss ten times more often.
In terms of male attention, I don't think it lessened with the braces. I think that's all in attitude newayZ.

Now, I have a retainer and I have a hard time wearing it but I try to at least put it on at night cause I don't want my two years and 4 months to all be in vain!

Hope this helps!

Think of them as jewelry for the teeth!!!!!!!;)
