Always wanted to be in a sorority
 

I am a freshman at a university in texas went through rush but my rec letters didnt come through so i got cut major. but i'm thinking about transferring (not because of rush,but because i hate the school) wanting to rush at whatever school i go to, hopefully my chances are not hurt majorly by being a sophomore!

Why did your rec letters "not come through", how do you know that they did not, and how are you certain that their absence is why you were cut?

Your post's wording also leads me to believe that you DID have groups that invited you back, but discounted them. Bad move. You could have found a group you loved.

At some schools being a sophomore matters a lot, at some schools it doesn't.

Are you FROM Katy? Did you register with the Alumnae Panhellenic?

I find it hard to believe that every single one of your recs "did not come through." (Whatever that is supposed to mean.) From your other post, you say you're looking at Auburn. So yes, recruitment will be just as competitive as a sophomore there (as well as other similar southern schools.) So the first piece of advice would be to make sure your recs "come through" since you have to have them there as well.

Well I will never know for sure that is the reason, but i was only invited back to the two I had cut. I had amazing conversations with all the girls, a good resume, and outstanding grades. And some of my friends that did get into the sororities said they think it was my rec letters. i got them from a local alumnae organization, and they think that maybe they weren't mailed to the right address or what not, because there is no reason why I should have been cut so hard.

Your friends were probably trying to be nice. The chances of the above scenario happening, especially in Texas, is pretty much zero.

Many schools in Texas have a very competitive recruitment, and cuts (yes, sometimes heavy cuts) can happen. I do not know where you plan to transfer to, but your chances with some chapters at some schools will be greatly diminished. Your best bet would be to gracefully accept all invitations that you receive and see rush through to the end.

Also, PNMs do not "cut" chapters. They simply rank.

Each chapter has a different address for their recs to be sent. I doubt every single one of those were sent to the "wrong" address. Just about everyone at a competitive recruitment has amazing conversations, a good resume and outstanding grades and many of them get cut too. It's too bad you didn't give those two houses who did "receive your recs" a chance.

You have no idea whether or not your recs came through. Even if they did, they would only get you a foot in the door. Once you are there, it's up to you.

She never answered if she registered with Katy Alumnae Panhellenic - if she had, I can swear that if she was qualified she got recs sent and to the proper address. That said, if we are talking UT all the recs in the world will not be enough. UT is a tough system.

You seem to be a very active alumnae and member of GC, I would love to hear any advice you have for me as a sophomore transfer at a different school with a competitive greek system. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks so much in advance :)

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to give you any advice other and above that which you can get from reading various threads: as a sophomore, you need to understand that there are some chapters at some schools which will cut you for being a sophomore. It's nothing personal - it's simply that they would rather have a member for 4 years than 3. I hope your grades are good, and that you were active on your campus your freshman year. I like the "Rush Right" book as far as coming up with a plan for recruitment. If you have a local alumnae panhellenic I would STRONGLY recommend you register with them (in addition to your campus panhellenic) as soon as you can and take advantage of any events they are holding this spring. Line up your recs again - and make sure you write thank you notes to anyone writing you a rec. HTH. Good luck.

This thread on conversation/personality during recruitment. Grades and involvement are important, but the conversations/impact that you make with the girls that you meet are also of utmost importance.
