Starting informal rush tomorrow & nervous?
 

Hey everyone :) I am starting informal rush tomorrow, I am only doing it at one house. My friend is already in the house and is taking me to all the events and said it'll be really fun because she can introduce me to everyone!

I'm a freshman & I went through formal in the fall but it didn't work out so I lost a lot of self-esteem, but I recovered from that and I feel like I am taking a risk by trying again, but I really want this to work out.

I have 3 events this week for it & I'm just wondering, do you have any tips for me? Like questions to ask the girls or just any tips if you've been through informal? Thank you so much :)

Lots of girls get nervous about how to react when asked if they went through FR. If it comes up, I suggest you spin it in your favor by saying it didn't work out, but you really got a good understanding of what Greek life entails, and you are certain it is something to which you can commit.

I remember being on the other side of informal, and it was a huge problem to have women accept a bid (or come very close) and then freak out as soon as they saw the financial info. The women who had been through FR had seen all this already in their little rush booklets.

Informal is a really good opportunity for girls who got overlooked during formal recruitment. Some people just don't stand out in that kind of environment; I know I really struggled with it! Informal is a totally different type of atmosphere. Just relax and be yourself, and don't worry about all the chaos that goes with formal recruitment. It's always better to be over dressed than under dressed, but make sure you show your personal style. These girls are going to be able to get to know you much better than they did during formal, and if you are relaxed and yourself, it'll be ok!

I am not intending to scare you, but as much as i am sure your friend hopes that you get a bid to her sorority, please remember that she alone can't make it happen. i know that she will advocate for you as much as she can, but she will most likely be a minor cog in the wheel, so it is up to you to sell yourself. present the best you that you can be, relax and genuinely enjoy the activities and the women you will meet. being sincere will be a positive thing.

As others have said the best strategy is to be confident. If you worry too much about the outcome it will show and instead of getting to know YOU the actives will get to know your Nervous Nelly side. Know that the worst possible outcome is that you don't get a bid...and you'll be just fine. Let the actives know that you're interested both in them and their organization and why...think about what attracts you to that chapter. The sisterhood? The actives? Their involvement on campus? Their philanthropy? Hopefully it's a combination of things...let them know that.

Good luck. Get plenty of sleep tonight, drink plenty of water today (dehydrated makes you both feel not as good and look not as good), and just spend a little time thinking about what questions you were asked during formal that maybe threw you or you didn't feel like you gave the best possible answer. Although the question and answer thing is WAY different during informal, you will feel better if you have your "what makes me awesome" spiel ready. Remember, you're there to make friends, not be crowned Miss America or Queen. Be yourself and you'll be fine. And if it doesn't work out this time, you can always try again in the fall. Rushing just one sorority doesn't give you much of a fall-back position, so don't think if this doesn't work out that you're hopeless. Or pathetic or any of those other monsters that are probably creeping into your brain about right now.
